    Yes, there is a VVT filter in each cylinder head. If you're changing the oil as specified, and using a reputable oil brand, you should have no worries about sludge.

    Thanks, I'm at 54k and change my oil every 5k. I did not realize there was a small filter for that but I guess as long as I keep changing the oil at a reasonable range I should be ok! "rep" to you :)

    All the timing marks look right on point, ugh I just finished putting it back together, I sent the cam to the machine shop to see if they found anything wrong with it and it looks good . From mechanic.

    Are you going to replace the actuator?

    The vvt actuator? Should I? Tired of throwing $ at it and not finding the issue

    Maybe @craigs1 can jump in since he had his apart recently..but..

    My thinking is that if the timing is correct, the ocv is working and that camshaft still cannot achieve it's full range of movement then the actuator has to be the problem.

    If the vvt actuator has a good supply of oil pressure (from the oil pump, through the ocv) it is responsible for moving that cam through it's full range.

    You already ruled out the ocv by replacing it. That's why I suggested moving it to the other bank and seeing if the code follows. On some engines that's an option..

    Hopefully that's it. Because we are out of ideas of what it could be.

    I already posted what I'd do, but the other guy had already opened up the engine and removed the chain.

    The OCVs are not interchangeable bank to bank, mounting brackets are different.

    Here's my recommended course of action:

    1.) Remove passenger side valve cover and the small 4-bolt chain tensioner cover;
    2.) Bring crank to 0 deg mark on the timing tab, with cylinder 1 on TDC firing;
    3.) Take pic of intake cam sprocket (same as VVT Actuator) timing marks including the cam bearing cap timing marks;
    4.) Take pic of timing chain tensioner plunger showing how far it is extended;
    5.) Post pics here for assessment.

    My thinking is that either the VVT Actuator got damaged when the cam broke, or guy timed the intake cam one tooth off. It's an easy mistake to make on bank 1 given the offset timing mark on the VVT Actuator...if you don't look really hard at the shop manual pic of the timing marks, and you time it at 12 o'clock instead of the slightly offset mark, you'll end up 1 tooth retarded on bank 1 intake cam.

    Let's see pics and go from there.

    And here's a pic of mine showing correct bank 1 intake cam timing...note the staggered locations of the colored end link plates, with each indexed on the correct timing mark on both the cam sprocket (VVT Actuator) and cam bearing cap mark.

    He won't get the color-coded link endplates to align, as that only happens during initial installation of the chain and some one-in-hundreds rotation of the crank. But he can align the timing marks on the crank and bank 1 intake cam sprocket. The long single-line timing mark on the sprocket needs to be aligned with the *indented* timing mark on the cam bearing cap, not the *upward* timing mark on the cap.

    Send page 2 of this procedure illustrating the timing marks: https://www.customtacos.com/tech.ol...06toyrm/06toypdf/06rmsrc/rm2006ta/0050014.pdf

    Get pics and post here.

    With the sprocket timing mark aligned with the *indented* timing mark at 1 o'clock, and the crank timing mark aligned with the zero (0) mark on the timing tab, the timing mark on the bank 1 exhaust sprocket timing mark needs to be aligned with the timing mark on the exhaust cam bearing cap...basically 12 o'clock straight up.

    If he can post pics of the timing mark alignment as I posted above, we can double check.

    And if it's timed correctly, next step is replacing the VVT actuator on bank 1 intake cam. It can be done without removing the timing cover.

    What would the step after the actuator be?
