Driver side intake cam gear was a tooth off. His links were off as well. Cranked and cranked the engine over to line them up, and they never would. Checked the TDC for cylinder 1, and made sure that side was lined up properly. Then realized where the problem was.

Lmao. Long day . But wouldn't you get the code for that bank? As p0012 is specific to passengers side?

I am sure it did, as well as it ran really poorly. This was over 6 years ago though.

Mine doesn't really run poor at all .has a slight vibration every 5 seconds or so . And feels slightly sluggish. But that's it.

Sounds pretty poor to me. Is the cam position sensor bad?

Sounds like how mine ran with the stretched-out main timing chain, and bank 1 nearly 8 degrees retarded versus crank. Seemed to run fine, but it really smoothed out and regained power after the chain replacement. I'm really thinking either he timed bank 1 cam wrong, or the VVT actuator was damaged when the cam broke.

Yeah he replaced the chain . Maybe . He says he's checked the timing three times. Idk man. Almost at the point I want to take it from him and pay someone else . Been a month and a half already .

Have him do what I posted.

1.) Pull the passenger side valve cover, put the crank timing mark at zero, then snap a pic of the cam sprocket/VVT actuator showing the timing marks on it and the intake cam bearing saddle. Also snap a pic of the exhaust cam sprocket showing the timing mark on it and the exhaust cam bearing saddle.

2.) Pull the 4-bolt timing chain tensioner cover and snap a pic of the tensioner showing the plunger.

    Need an expert opinion here.

Earlier this week I replaced the passenger side OCV valve, the old one was definitely bad, I tested it with 12V and no movement at all.
I cleaned the filter too, it wasn't too bad.

I thought I had it fixed but I didn't drive the truck much and Thursday/Friday it keeps throwing the P0012 code again. Reset it several times.

Now there's always the off chance I got a bad part from AZO, which I hope it is but I have a couple questions before I proceed.

    1) Could running the truck for a long time with the bad OCV valve mess up the Camshaft Timing Gear Assembly. I wouldn't think it would, but I should probably ask.
    2) Just as in #1 above, could that cause looose or jumped teeth in the timing chain?
    3) That VVT sensor shown in post #18 of this thread.... obviously any part can go bad, but do these(?) and will it trigger that code? I'm reading this and I see no mention of it: http://tacomaface.epizy.com/FSM/data/ileaf/06toyrm/06toypdf/06rmsrc/rm2006ta/0060013.pdf

The fact that the original OCV valve was bad really has me leaning towards just a faulty replacement part. I'll pull both the filter and the valve out again, but any thoughts on the above questions?

Have you tested the new OCV with voltage?

If you take the valve covers off you can check the timing on the cans. If off half a tooth, stretched or worn timing sprockets. Takes about 1.5 hrs disassemble and reassemble. Not hard.

I didn't have time to pull it out today, but that'll be the first thing I check.

Well that's good to know, that its easy to do. Will it be obvious to actually see 1/2 tooth difference? And/or a stretched chain?

Yeah, just take a straight edge onto the cam timing mark and try to line it up with mark on the bearing cap. Very simple.

Yeah I pulled the filter, it was clean, 12V tested the valve, it worked, checked the cam timing, as best as I can see, its ok too. Still throwing the stupid code. P0012

So, I go back to what I asked about the sensor on bank 1, could it be the cause and is there a test? Next question, all thats left (I think) is the camshaft gear assembly. It looked fine... but I suppose that doesn't matter.

One thing I did notice though, and I thought about it later when I put it all back together, was when I pulled the filter, I didn't get any oil dripping out. I wonder if there's a chance that whatever path the oil takes after that filter to the OCV valve could be clogged?

This is driving me crazy now. Its war. The good news is the engine compartment is so darn clean now, I barely have to wash my hands when I'm done.
