The wheels the guy is running in this video are the Pro Wheels. The OP was asking about stock Off Road wheels. There is a difference in offset and according to an older thread here is "Pro Tacoma wheels are +13mm offset, while the OR wheels are +25mm. 16x7."

I'm curious in this as well, as I'm considering running 285's when the time comes, but I have another wrench to throw in this already mixed bag! I bought some ebay Tacoma Pro wheel knockoff's, which I've been super happy with, but they are 16x8 with 0 offset (instead of the stock 16x7 with +13mm offset). I'm running a 2.25" / 1" lift as she sits now; 20181228_131912.jpg

16x8 0 offset is quite ideal for fitment of the bigger tires. A guy earlier in this thread has them and runs without issues.

Sorry, I kind of muddied up the water with that reference to the pro wheels. What I was trying to says was that 285/75R16 will definitely fit on a stock OR wheel, which as you pointed out are 16x7, +25 offset. They will also fit on a 16 in pro wheel, which is also 16x7, it just has +13 offset, which makes it poke out about a half inch more.

Lots of guys are (or were) running 285s on stock OR wheels:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-with-larger-tires-and-or-lifted-on-stock-wheels.517453

That setup should work fine with 285s. The 8in wide with 0mm offset is what I have, that's probably the most common width/offset for aftermarkets.

What size tires are you currently running?

Thanks, I'm planning to lift 2" and keep my current tires 265/70/17 which are one size up. I'd go with 285s myself but gas prices in my province are the worst in the continent.

The stock or wheels, normally have to run a spacer to clear 285’s, the pro wheel, or the replica pro wheel you should run fine without spacers because of the offset

If you keep pushing the wheels out with spacers or different offset wheels to clear the UCA's you will end up with more rubbing with the wheels turned at the outside the fender wells...

Guys please correct me if I'm wrong but it all depends if you can fit 285s without rubbing on your wheel offset correct?

From what I’ve read 16” with 0 offset and 4.5” BS. You shouldn’t hit on anything , no UCA rubbing , no cab mount rubbing That’s normal driving on the street..... You going to rub off road!!

That's part of it, but not the only factor. Whether you have any lift or not, 285s are wider than 265s, so the inside of the tire will rub the upper control arm with the stock wheel offset (+25mm). You need a smaller offset value (at least +13mm) to push the wheel/tire towards the outside of the fender and away from the control arm. You can accomplish this either with wheels that have less offset, or use wheel spacers to push the stock wheel out. Keep in mind that stock wheels are 7 inches wide, so if you get 8 inch wide aftermarket wheels, they will be 1/2 inch wider (on each side of center).

But the further you push it out, the more likely it is to rub on the front or rear of the wheel well, or cab mount. To fix that you can:
    • use lift to raise the wheel well away from the tire
    • trim/bend/remove the areas where it rubs
    • some combination of the 2
In my case, I have 0mm offset wheels (16x8), so I clear the control arm just fine. I have a 2 inch lift that lets the tires clear almost everything, but I had to trim just a bit of my mudflaps where it would rub in reverse when the wheel was turned.

There are really just too many variables to be able to say definitively whether a certain combination of offset and lift will rub or not. The mudflaps were an option added by the dealer on my truck, other guys may not have them, so they wouldn't have seen the rub I experienced. Some trucks have more positive caster, which pushes the wheel/tire away from the rear of the wheel well, so they are less likely to have rub.

    Like, so many.
I have 285s with a 2 inch level. I have 0 offset wheels though and I went ahead and did the CMC and pinch weld since I do go off road.

Does anyone know if a 285/75/16 tire will fit in the stock spare location under the bed?
