    What’s up TW,

Has anyone ever towed a car on a trailer? If so was trailer equipped with brakes? Or not, How long did you tow for? And any other add on or must to tow safely?

    thanks hope to hear back!

How heavy’s the car? If you’re under 5k pounds you should be good

The car is under 5k for sure. Have you towed a car with your taco?

Problem with the full trailer well the uhaul rental it’s 2k pounds by itself so what weight are you at with the car itself? And how far are you planning to tow it

Car weights roughly 3k and it would be like a 400 mile drive.

Tow a 2000lb car on a twin axle flat deck trailer with a jack, fuel jugs, chairs and pop up’s in the bed no issue.

Same! Every other weekend. I have trailer brakes, but I can’t be bothered to plug in my controller. Don’t really need them.

Yes, you can. Your truck can tow 6800lbs. You'll need trailer brakes for towing a car, and make sure you keep it in 4th or lower. Some say 5th, but I never tow anything heavy in an O.D. gear.

The drivetrain might PULL 6800 lbs, but that doesn't mean it can TOW 6800 lbs. Those tow ratings assume only a driver in the cab with no other passengers or cargo, on level ground and at sea level. Nor do they consider payload. Most Tacoma's only have 1000-1200 lbs. A 6800 lb trailer along with the hitch is going to put almost 1000 lbs on your suspension. Leaving at most 200 lbs for a driver with nothing else in the truck.

For a Tacoma around 4500-5000 lbs is a sensible max weight to be towing and it sounds like the OP is going to be pretty close with the car and trailer combined. You definitely need trailer brakes. It is illegal virtually anywhere to pull over 3000 lbs without them. And Tacoma brakes suck anyway. It is hard enough to stop just the truck.

I've pulled my 4500 lb travel trailer with my 2nd gen. It will do it, but it isn't the best towing experience, and I wouldn't do it in mountains and at altitudes over about 5000'. And I certainly wouldn't want any more weight behind me.

Your truck isn't ideal for what you want to do. I think you're on the bubble. But if it were me and I didn't have to cross any mountains I'd probably go for it. Pulling that much weight on a daily basis is going to be hard on the truck, but for a onetime thing it will be OK. That is assuming your weight estimates are accurate.

3300 mile road trip with my old steel trailer and loaded up probably above the 6800lb load limit. Pulled like a champ even in the mountains. Weight distribution hitch was 100% required. Trailer brakes where useful in the city. I used engine braking in the mountains.

I regularly pull my new trailer (total load 3500lbs) 300 miles. No need for a special hitch, sway bars, or trailer brakes at that weight.

I have pulled as much as 12,000lbs with my Tacoma’s (diesel trailers for farming). You can pull whatever you want as long as you adjust your speed and driving style to accommodate. You can pull up to 75mph at the towing limit if you have trailer brakes and a weight distribution hitch. Above that you need experience and to slow the heck down and avoid everything but county roads lol.

Went about 600 miles. No trailer brakes. Two trailer tire blowouts. I hate trailer tires. My truck is a manual but there is no reason a slushbox can't tow too. Like @OpelGT said, you have to adjust your driving to accommodate, don't just drive like you normally do. 20200208_122243.jpg

Love when people brag about towing over the towing capacity. It's like, congratulations you put yourself and others on the road in danger.

Y'all wild as hell not using trailer brakes with that much weight. That's pretty unsafe, hard on your truck, and usually illegal (state-dependent).
