They werent the same 4.0, I believe the 4 runner 4.0 had extra valve timing with intelligence compared to the taco 4.0. The 4 runner 4.0 was allso rated higher horsepower.

The 4Runner has the same engine/trans combo as the 2nd Gen Tacomas.
My Dad has a 2017 4Runner TRD Pro. I think the Tacoma with the same engine will tow better because it has more truck like gearing.
The 4Runner has more pep in its step in terms of get up and go, which IMO is not adventageous for heavy towing.

I think the Taco would be better.

I cannot speak to the 3rd Gen Tacoma. That truck sucks to drive IMO all the way around. The better torque might be better for towing but the gear searching is annoying.

    Eibach stage 1 -wheeler’s 2” aal-spc uca’s FN 5 Star w/Falken Rubitrek AT 265/70r17. Nitro 4:88’s KDMax tuned Leer 100r
Sorry to hear that....the 4runner isn’t without it’s issues for sure. I have bilstein 5100’s/ome coils and Eibach rear coils and like it a lot better than stock. With 2.5” lift and aftermarket wheels w/ 265/70/17 at’s I still get 17-20 mpg on the highway (75 mph).

If your going to tow a lot though....a tundra would better suit your needs especially towing more than 4000lbs....
