can a Toyota (or any) stay running in idle overnight?

on a hot or cold night.. can you sleep in a running car without over heating.

No.

It may or may not overheat, but doing this to a gasoline engine will put 10,000 miles of wear on it in 12 hours, and you will likely die in your sleep from the exhaust.

I have let my truck idle for upwards of 18 hrs before. Mainly from being in 45* below zero in north dakota

 

then again... i may be alone (and over heating)

I'm serious.

The fuel and lubrication system was not designed for extended idling.
Oil pressure is typically quite low, and will go lower the longer the engine runs, and fuel will wash the oil from the cylinder walls, increasing wear on the rings and sleeves.

You can only idle for 4+ hours if you have done a diesel conversion. This must include twin 6 inch or greater stacks run through the bed, a huge ass Cummings sticker on the back window regardless if its a D4D or not, and a sticker that says "Lifted trucks rule, fat chicks cant jump"

Seriously... I wouldn't idle a consumer-level oil burner that long.
There's a big difference between an OTR truck and a Powerjoke. For one thing, 10 GALLON oil capacity.

 

I'm going to disagree but you are entitled to your thinking. Police cars idle for hours and never have an issue. The only thing that idling does that is a negative is the fuel isn't burnt as well. Soot can build up in the cat and wear it out a little faster. The modern gas engine is very similar to a diesel and both are capable of idling long term just fine. A carb'd engine won't idle for long periods because the air/fuel ratio will be much too rich for it to remain running.

 

I don't know about your trucks but my oil pressure gauge says 40psi at idle which is more than enough to oil it amply.

and to answer the original question: No a modern gas vehicle would not over heat if left idling overnight of for any or any amount of time.

 

Barring CO poisoning, engine wear, death, infant mortality, AIDS, Gonorrhea, the Clapp, and a zombie apocalypse, I have checked (via ScanGauge) that at idle, my truck consumes 0.3 gallons per hour. Do the math.

 

Your CAT would not like at all read your manual most tell you if your idling for a length of time you should rev the motor now and then to clear out the exhaust system.
