If the truck truely does lose oil pressure the longer it idles, you could set an alarm on the ScanGauge or Ultragauge so it'll wake you up so you can rev it up for a few minutes.

Rich is correct. It is NOT good for the truck as a whole.

Is it going to cause a catastrophic failure? No. Will you even necessarily notice the difference? Probably not.

He's correct however...idling is when ICE's are at their least efficient, and the excess uncombusted fuel has a deleterious effect on the cats, cylinder lube, spark plug electrodes, and byproduct buildup within the combustion chamber and engine oil.

The only time I would expose the truck to this type of wear would be life-critical situations such as Btnewman's example of extremely cold weather where the vehicle might not restart if shut off.

Edit to note: Oil pressure would not be an issue.

Well if you want to idle that long, Be sure you have some spare exhaust valves, a new cat, and you might want a spare brain too after the CO poisoning.

 

Oil pressure is going to depend on the vehicle/engine and it's state of repair.

Some may hold 40psi at idle, others may not.
My '94 dropped like a rock at idle. My motorcycle idles at about 9psi when the engine is hot.

Ultragauge doesn't watch oil pressure... all we have is a switch.




Do what you want to the engine, my main concern is exhaust fumes. It doesn't take much. I'd never sleep in the cabin of a running vehicle.

 

The problem with this theory is the ECU monitors fuel distribution to the cylinders and wont send excess fuel.

 

Lol...Gas generators/pumps etc... run way faster than idle with centrifugal oil-slingers in air-cooled stationary position for hours on end...in various conditions without fail, even with the increasingly lower than historical quality standards of companies like Briggs and Stratton as the powerplant. I am pretty sure....and I hope to God....Toyota engineering is at least that good. After all you do have a fan blowing on the radiator.. IMO the engine is as rested as it can be at idle. less RPM = less heat. But yeah I would watch out for co2 in stationary air. Other than that as others have said...maybe slightly increased oxidation of plugs and exhaust parts? but really how bad could it be.

 

You can't compare a truck to a generator. Much, much, much different application...
