Alright then... time to put up or shut up.

First person to actually do this and run their engine at idle all night will be declared the winner and forever known as the "some kind of stupid" champion.

    Go...

    Really? I was not aware....

But I can compare the anatomy of the historical properties of the science of the internal combustion gasoline engine.

Running the engine at idle which is usually 800RPM will give you 576,000 revolutions in 12 hours compared to a vehicle running at 2000RPM will do 1,440,000 revolutions in 12 hours. so you are saying a engine doing almost 1/3 the work will create more wear? On the oil pressure you only need 7 pounds of pressure in order to fill the lifters which are at the top of the motor on most new vehicles. So basically everything you have said is false.

The problem with that theory is that it is impossible.

Combustion efficiencyis a ratio of fuel combusted to fuel injected and is always less than 100%. How much less depends on many outside factors. The ECU will do its best under all circumstances to optimize combustion efficiency, but there are two caveats:

    1) It is slow to adjust, requiring quite a bit of sustained sensor data from multiple sensors. This is why the ECU doesn't magically open up more cam timing as soon as you fill with your first tank of 93 octane, but will do so after 2 to 4 tanks at the higher rating.

    2) Idling combustion is the least efficient combustion an ICE can do. It therefore by definition maximizes the effects of inefficient combustion for that engine and DOES increase wear.

This is commonly known fact in auto-engineering circles:

    http://www.gpsdirectonline.com/vehicle_life_factors.php

    http://www.worktruckonline.com/Arti...Managers-Should-Know-About-Idle-Limiters.aspx

etc. You can find plenty more sources with simple internet searching.

You're making the extremely incorrect assumption that all RPMs are equal. If that's true, shouldn't my gas mileage be better around town than during highway travel since RPM is so much lower much of the time?

    Note: That question was rhetorical.

Run your motor for 1000 RPM with no oil in it. See how it holds up. Combustion chamber conditions matter.

I go hunting almost every weekend august-december and i sleep three nights for 14 hours a night with my truck running and have been doing it for a few years now and never had a single problem. There is also 3 others that we go with that do the same with there trucks and have been doing it ever since the 80's...

I second this, and also the oil flow is relevant to RPM... so as RPM increases, pressure is a result in the frequency at which the oil is delivered...which is a result of how fast the oil pump is mechanically rotating. The coverage at any RPM would be engineered to be constantly sufficient enough to provide vital lubrication.

It might also be relevant to mention to folks at this point that due to iron-lined combustion chambers, the 4.0L 1GR-FE V6 is not a conventionally rebuildable engine.

If you fuck it, you're coming out of pocket for a new cylinder block. Odds are poor, but I wouldn't risk it unnecessarily.

    My Proposal to MythBusters:

Truck 1: 2013 Tacoma, Driven normally daily to 100k miles.

Truck 2: 2013 Tacoma, Placed in a box with a controlled temperature.. that fluctuates with the seasons to match the same climate as the real life sample Truck1.

Truck 2 will idle until it reaches the equivalent total overall complete RPM equal to Truck 1 in the real world test.

Both Trucks will be fitted with crankshaft overall total RPM meters, and both trucks will measure fuel consumption for the duration of the test.

At the end of the test, The engine will be dissected and all mechanical tolerances measured with micrometers to determine wear.

The urine content of the Truck(s) will be tested throughout.

To settle this debate, we need the intellect of a world renowned, ASE Master to chime in... Call on the great Linguini.

Seriously though, I'm curious to know the real/true answer.

A LOT of people don't realize these engines have special cylinder liners that are cast into the block at manufacture and cannot be bored.

Due to CAFE and EPA requirements, the days of being able to bore/rebuild engines for an inexpensive rebuild at end of life are probably over. Keeping your heap running after hard use is going to cost quite a bit more in the not too distant future.

Learned a lot about that reading Torspd's build thread...

You can rebuild one but you better have deep pockets. ;)

So.. whats worse? Running a truck at 45 below, where your truck never gets over 160* running down the road? Or idling it all night just to make sure you can get to work tomorrow?

    Amount is key.

Neither situation is ideal. A single session of idling 12 hours would add more wear than say, a single day of daily driving in extremely cold conditions.

But then, maybe you drive in those conditions 4 months a year...

    +1

The worst is living or working in a location where you have to park the truck where it gets down to -45.

Only way I'd live in an area like that is if I could have a heated garage to park in.

Well. Luckily. I dont have to deal with those conditions any more. Its just sucked cuz it didnt matter what you did, you were always cold. We had a nasty long power out for a couple days in noryh dakota, and your vehicle was the only place you could kind of get warm. Luckily, I drive a toyota and didnt have to worry at least about my truck.
