Can all Tacoma's tow 6500 lbs (6Cyl, not 4)? Do I have to have the tow package on it or a transmission cooler? 2015 2nd gen to today, if that matters.

    • Google is your friend. In 0.63 seconds I received ~7 million results. 3500 lbs - 6800 lbs depending on trim and engine. I'm not going to list them out here since you can find what you are looking for in less than a second

    • When discussing towing you need to include your transmission and your trim but don't do it here for reasons discussed in the bullet above.

I was not clear. I know the rating. I am asking if I could do it stock, not could a Tacoma pull the rating from Toyota. There is a tow package, but didn't know if that was required, or I could simply put on a hitch without a cooler. Granted, the cooler isn't super expensive, but I didn't want to not buy a Tacoma for a good price because I was wrong on towing requirements without the package. I don't want to miss a good deal because the unit for sale didn't have a package I thought was necessary.

I did search, but I didn't see an answer I was sure of, so I asked here.

Tow package required and depends on what truck you have. 4wd 2wd double or access cab all make a difference

Do a VIN search on the truck in question.

Op, to put it simply without trying to look like a better than thou douche, no. Not all Tacoma's can tow 6500lbs.
Without a hitch, you would be putting all the tongue weight on the bumper, which would cause the bumper to eventually look at the ground. Without the cooler, you will cause an increase in trans temps and shorten the life of the fluid.
You can upgrade aftermarket by adding a hitch, wiring in a brake controller and 7 pin plug, and plumbing in an aftermarket trans cooler. You can also upgrade your alternator to a higher amp one to help keep trailer batteries topped up while driving. Lastly would be the oil cooler which requires a new water pump housing, lines, and the oil cooler itself.
This is exactly what I did to my non-tow package 07 prerunner. But I eventually scored an OE oil cooler setup here.

Thanks for that. I don't have an immediate need to tow, but I wanted to check and be sure before I spent 30k+. Because I know I will want to. That mistake would have hurt...bad. if it can be added later and do the job without the original Toyota package, then I'm good.

Another thing to consider, if you buy a truck without tow package you won’t be pre wired for the brake controller.

I have been watching TFL and they kept talking about those. I had never heard of that until then. That's when I started realizing I had no idea what I was doing.

This post also made me wonder at what point would you need a cooler? I only tow a landscape trailer with my 2021 stock SR5 and the heaviest weight I've towed is a one ton pallet of wood pellets for about 10 miles. Most of what I use it for is my bike, (@500lbs) or a couple riding mowers. I'll trailer my bike and camping gear a couple hundred miles one way when I go on vacation.

Aux trans cooler is one of those things that is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
Not hard to install and cost is not hard to stomach.
Where the $ in converting a non-tow package is the engine oil cooler and wp housing.
