As others have said, adding a locker would be way more effective and lots cheaper.

You right I mistaken trac vs atrac. I guess I would install a winch.

ALL Tacomas since 2009 have TRAC, TRAC OFF (AUTO LSD), and VSC OFF modes
Only the 4X4 Off Road TRD (and now PRO) have A-TRAC or MTS + CRAWL.

TRAC is a limited slip system. There is some braking and some engine power cut to reduce spinning of the tires to help you move from a stop in slippery conditions.

TRAC OFF (called AUTO LSD in 2WD) has no engine power cut and is a stronger limited slip... at least on the 2nd Gen Tacos.

VSC OFF turns off both TRAC and VSC for free spinning of the tires ('open differentials' and no traction controls or stability controls).

A-TRAC is more like front and rear lockers in that tire rotation is matched across each axle, using the brakes to halt any free spinning so the energy goes to moving the truck, instead.

Friend an I have same trucks 100% twins Im stick he is an auto. That crawl control is good but doesnt beat a clutch dump at 5k to get out of some sand. Even more the automatic transmission limits rpm with TRAC-OFF. All this electronic stuff is a selling point for the truck and for people who cant drive LOL

It isn't that way, but glad you like your manual. Tell your friend to try the various modes to learn them and not wait until he gets himself stuck. He should go to a steep, loose rock or rutted hill and do a climb in each of the 10 possible modes to see how far he can climb safely and slowly in each. H2, H4, then L4. VSC OFF, TRAC ON, TRAC OFF, and so forth. The systems are amazing and I come from old Jeep stock!

I have lockers and CC. I use the CC when shit gets crazy and I don’t feel like blasting or bouncing over boulders (save parts). I would much rather have a 2nd transfer case but CC is a nice to have only because I have it. I do agree, juice isn’t worth the squeeze. Get lower gears and lockers before CC. The other feature I like with the CC is the throttle dial. Allows me to navigate look out my side door window, etc. (for those getting ready to blast me, I also run a 6 speed MT FJ, while it’s a blast... it’s also nice not feathering a clutch following your buddies on steep trails who are in AT’s... makes for some fancy footwork!)

a good yardstick to add something that came with a different model OR you decided to not get that option is usually 3-4x the cost of the option when ordering from the option list from the factory to add it after the fact. and since toyota likes to break everything out piece by piece in the parts ordering system, the cost of the parts are 2-3 times the cost than normal if you would have just had it added at the factory.
