Can disconnecting the alternator while the truck is running cause any damage?

I'm experiencing idle symptoms identical to the person who posted this:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/fluctuating-idle-2-7-manual.496218/

Both he and another person in that thread solved their idle problem by replacing the alternator. Before buying new alternators, both of them pulled the plug on the bad alternator while their truck was running and the problem immediately went away. Here's his post about doing this:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/fluctuating-idle-2-7-manual.496218/page-3#post-16543528

And here's the other person in that thread's post about doing the same:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/fluctuating-idle-2-7-manual.496218/page-4#post-20213306

I want to try the same because now I am wondering if I'm having the same problem causing my truck's symptoms. But I'm hesitant to pull the plug on the alternator while the truck is running. Is it possible for this to damage anything? Either the alternator itself (in the event that the alternator is not the problem) or any other electronics that it powers?

You can unplug the connector on the alternator with no issues, without ignition voltage to the regulator it will just stop charging.

You can unplug the Alternator before you start it.

But there’s no risk of injury involved doing it that way.

As long as you're talking about the field connector, yes it's safe to unplug

The big battery cable shouldn't be removed with engine running

Good point, I didn't think I needed to say that... But you can never be too sure these days.

Thanks, guys. I unplugged the field connector today with the engine off and then started the engine. It didn't completely get rid of my rough idle symptoms like it did for the people in the original post, but it did make things a little better. I think the next step is to take my alternator to the local parts store for a bench test.
