This right here is the key I think, if i didn’t have friends that would do the same for me I would have a lot more friends. But as Ron Swanson says “friends.... three is sufficient”

This has been an awesome thread, better than most.

Personally, I think it’s great that there’s so many really cool people that would loan out something like this with little thought about their own financial future.

The older you get, the more screwed up things you have happen or learn from others misfortunes.

A co-workers daughter had some friends over, no parents at home (16-18 years old) and some of the girls got a great idea to dig the yeafdog out of the garage and fire that bad boy up. Two girls took off on the cheap side by side and crashed into a tree. One of them was seriously injured and required extensive facial reconstruction. They did not have permission to drive the SxS and pretty much stole it. My co-worker was sued by one of his best friends (the daughter that was injured) to pay medical bills. It went to arbitration and since my co-worker did not properly secure the SxS, it was his fault, even though the girls stole the damn thing off his property. That was an 80k dollar problem.

So here is my story. My Queen was in a pretty horrific accident with another SUV. The other driver was ejected and his suburban rolled over on him. He required 8 orthopedic surgeries. 3 weeks in ICU plus surgeries racked up over 580k dollars. Our policy limits were 300k. Do the math. 4 years in court, and solid proof that my wife was not at fault, all charges were dropped. This still took a huge hit on my bank account (enough to buy a Tacoma cash).

Point of this is, life happens and you have to be prepared for this. Out of no fault of your own, one could be financially responsible and crippled for years. Personally, loaning the truck and getting a scratch or dent is the least of your worries. If that’s the worst thing that happens, you won the day. I own the titles to all of my motorized vehicles, but that doesn’t mean I want to purchase them again.

What do I do differently now?

500k limits across the board with a healthy umbrella policy.

All keys are locked up on anything motorized.

At this point in my life, 5 years away from retirement (44yrs old), doing dumb shit could make me work until I drop dead.

I guess your coworker’s daughter won’t be asking her friend to play at her wedding.

You know the messed up thing is, my co-worker never even said anything to this other kid. In fact, that kid lives in his basement now. She never knew what went down between her parents until his own daughter said something. She was blown away.

This co-worker is a good friend, and has a huge heart, but I can say, he would do things differently for sure.

The girls are still best friends...FYI. Not sure if she plays any instruments though. ;)

Noted. I had several girlfriends in HS that took their parents cars and crashed them.

One long term girlfriends parents trusted me over their own daughter, when they needed to go on business trips, they handed me the keys to the cars and house. Told me it was ok to have small parties and they wanted me to stay the weekend.

I had no issue with that. Lol

    Dip into that excuse arsenal.

    Several categories, use where applicable.

Weather:"No!, have you seen the weather forecast? It might hail this weekend, and I just can't risk it!"

Mechanical:"I have been hearing this sound in the engine. It's probably nothing since it is new, but I just can't risk it until I have a qualified mechanic look at it."

Too Busy: "Oh man, wouldn't you know, this is the one weekend I have to... (haul firewood, drywall, household supplies etc...)

Calendar: "I wanted to surprise the wife with a date night in my new truck. Yes, it is silly, but, you know how she is, and I know you will understand... " You will have to follow through with this one though.

Modifications: "Damn! I was going to get an estimate for a (spray-in bed liner, lift kit, nerf bars, new tires/rims etc...) and I had an appointment this weekend, just don't tell my wife, she would kill me if she knew!"

Financial: "I am leasing this truck, I don't really even own it. If something were to happen to it, imagine what would happen to my credit/insurance rates/etc."

Or, just be 100% honest (this one WILL get you into trouble)... " I just can't lend out my new truck."

Just be creative, and most importantly, get him to agree, or at least empathize with you.

I didn’t see the part where the friend did that. If that’s the case I’d tell him to go pound sand too.

My friends would take better care of my stuff than I would myself so that’s where I’m coming from. I lent my best friend my Indian Springfield for an afternoon so he could test ride it with his wife along to see if it would suit them better than the bike he had at the time. He brought it back as it was when he left but it came back with a full tank of gas. He’s done similar for me.

Reason #533 to own a small utility trailer...

"Take my trailer instead. Don't worry about scratching or breaking it. Even your Subaru can tow it. Oh, no hitch? Well fill the trailer up with your junk and I'll drive you to the dump when it's full". Better than lending someone your truck, IMO.

If he’s dumping a dead hooker off at the dump I’m pretty sure you could be charged with an accessory charge.....

In all seriousness I don’t have a problem with certain people wanting/needing to borrow my truck under certain circumstances. But what pisses me off is when a friend of a friend or someone you haven’t spoken to in a while all the sudden needs some help and all the sudden they thought of you, because you have a truck.

I still just can’t get over that the friend wants to swap a freaking Subaru of all things. Yuuuuck.

Can’t he at least go find a Ridgeline...and try to swap that for your Tacoma instead...?

Friends are friends until crap hits the fan. Not to sound cynical but with insurance and liabilities it's not wise to lend your vehicle to someone. Maybe he could rent a trailer for his Subaru, or be a man and own a truck.

There's always those that decide they don't need a truck anymore, then turn and beg to borrow. Wait til the next get together, he'll be bragging about how much money he's now saving on fuel.
Tell ya what, use that savings and rent your own truck, or do what most do, call trash service for small dumpster or rental bag, it's easy and cheap, unless you're in a rural area that doesn't offer.

My two cents: My Taco is a 2008 quad cab, when I purchased it had 188k miles on it and it looked mint. I intentionally purchased a manual because I love manuals, for my lifestyle it just works, but most importantly I bought so that not many people would ask to borrow (auto tranny people ) but mostly so that my boyfriend could never drive it since he, at 62, can't drive manual, he's asked me to teach him and my response is always "I'm sorry but I like my transmission attached." He purchased a 2008 Toy Camry with the automanual, I told him if he can learn to use that, listen to engine, shift, etc, then maybe I'll teach you.

I'm with the group, either offer to drive and help or ask him to rent one from Lowe's, Home Depot, Uhaul, wherever, maybe even drop the cash to rent for him.
