Howdy. Backing plates are a little ugly being almost 20 years old. Since I have to replace the inner rear axle seals, I want to change the backing plates as well. Do I need to pop the axle out of the bearings to remove the plate? I don't have the 30 ton press or fancy tool...

Fantastic. I've been looking online for a complete pre-pressed axle assembly for the 1st gens, but I'm coming up dry. I've found them for 2005+ trucks, but not mine. Are they typically unavailable, or am I not interwebz savvy enough?

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
I have never really looked . If there was enough demand someone would be doing it.

    Just an idea .

Source a used set of axles install all your new parts just swap the complete assembly if you don`t want the down time getting things pressed off and on.

Here you go good excuse to by a press build the tool to press the bearings rebuild the axles you pull out and sell them.

You would need to figure your cost plus a profit and shipping to see if it was cost effective

Here's how......there's a tool on ebay for $75.....if u cant make one like in the video....

If you take apart.....you'll have to buy new seal and 0-ring, for each side....plus new diff fluid...,

Most rear bearings don't die of old age.......they fail when that seal fails and all the bearing grease in the $100 bearing gets flushed out by leaking diff fluid.....

Actually just got a rattle can of rust convert, and can of chassis black from auto store , and cardboard sheild ......
cleaned them up and lipstick'ed mine....

Didn't take anything a part......however I plan to do that seal and o-ring in next year.....mines getting close to 170K......
timing it to coincide with the next diff fluid change.
