Well you have to understand that up here in the great white north there are a lot of stereotypes about Texas and few of them are complementary. When I visited Texas I discovered that none of the stereotypes were accurate. No real surprise I guess.

Every major US city has such problem, when I visit a new city that I'm not familiar with, I just use these 2 factors to decide if I should or should not go to a neighborhood:

    • if a neighborhood has a whole foods store, that's an indicator of safety; whole foods have armed private security in most of their stores.
    • if street intersections, parking spaces have a lot of oil stain, it's a neighborhood to avoid; well-maintained vehicles don't leak oil, and the less oil stain on the streets = more % of people who take care of their cars = more % of law abiding citizens in the neighborhood = general less crime

I have to conceal carry when I go running in mornings before work in Austin. One time a bum deliberately ran out at and scared the #@$@ out of me around 6am and another time a truck decided to drive reeeaal slow next to me on a morning run probably deciding whether I was a good victim or not. Not to mention the dudes wearing daisy dukes in some places....yuck. Not going to raise my kiddos here!

There's no practical enforcement. Drive it as much as you can stand the noise lol. The rear cat is unmonitored, so its absence won't throw a code.

Had an accord i owned get the cats stolen. I bought flex pipe from the auto store with some exhaust clamps to route exhaust to the muffler at least. I enjoyed it for a whole hour until i had enough and needed earplugs. Ran it like that for 2 months til the shop could get their hands on a new cat.

So, if your Taco leaks oil (either timing cover or rear diff), you gangster?

In all seriousness, not just about being well-maintained, certain vehicles leak more oil than others, and sure a lot more than Tacomas.

If you see tons of Buick LeSabre, Chevy Impala, etc, which all leak quite a lot more oil than a Camry or Prius, you know I'm correct in the assessment it's a bad neighborhood

Doesn’t help you get your stolen stuff back, and I am sorry to hear that happened.
For the future and anyone else, I bolted up a cat shield two weekends ago. Took all of 30 minutes.
    https://catshield.com/

It isn’t full proof. But it’s a serious hassle for any thief. The bolts are unique so you theoretically cannot just unscrew it.
Price of it vs my deductible was very worth it.
