Can I find out if a Tacoma had been smoked in?

I'm in the market for a used first gen and my biggest concern is finding out if a truck has been smoked in. A first gen is probably going to have at least 3 owners and most likely one of them was a smoker. I possibly have asthma and another lung condition that no doctor seems to be able to diagnose.

Is there any effective way to find out if a Tacoma has been smoked in other than asking the owner and trying to smell tobacco odors?

You ever seen The Detail Geek on YouTube? I bet taking it to a detailer like that could remove any residual smoke issues.

Most first gens don't have a cabin air filter. So I'd say turn that heater up, and take a good smell.

I'll have to check it out I know a bunch of air fresheners can get the smoke smell out in a week or so but I'm concerned about the smoke that stays in the seats apparently for years. Thanks

I wouldn't worry about it too much; an ozone generator is like $70 on Amazon and can kill off almost all of the smell. I bought a truck that had been smoked in and after a generous ozone treatment only one person ever mentioned anything even after being asked directly

The cabin on these trucks is tiny so there really isnt much hiding it. Hop in and take a sniff.

Mine was smoked in, a few ozium treatments and youd never know anymore. I also deep cleaned it once I brought it home. Baking soda brushed into the carpets, take trim pieces off and clean behind them etc.

Yeah, this dude does a DEEP clean. He’s cleaned a smoker’s car before and you should see the stuff he got out of the seats and carpet.

Silver xtra-cab,old man emu 3 inch lift, 2016 wheels, arb front bumper, receiver hitch, Automatic transmission cooler, tundra front calipers, new frame.
I bought a first gen tundra on eBay a long time ago and it was an amazing deal, but after it was shipped from Atlanta to Arizona I found out it REEKED of smoke. I did the OZIUM treatment several times spaying into the return vents on AC and heat and doing the seats and headliner liberally, it was a regular cab. Im not that picky but my wife is real sensitive and even she was happy with it after that. Incidentally I sold it to my bug man and he painted a logo on it and I saw it about a year ago and asked the owner and he had almost 400,000 mile son it still on the original 4.0 v6 and had just done the Automatic transmission, It was towing a 500 gallon bug spray trailer then the guy who had was a block and stucco guy and he towed with it too!

i also have asthma. Get in and smell it, you’ll be able to tell, immediately!

I bought a truck that was smoked in (tobacco) and after a round of febreeze vent inserts I can’t tell anymore.
Other than being unpleasant for half an hour after I bought it on the drive home, it did not put me in the hospital, or cause me to take a couple shots of my inhaler, or require a breathing treatment, it in fact, did not adversely effect me at all.

I was a bubble boy for the first 3 years of my life, so I think you’ll survive.

Why would you want to make it harder to inhale?

A guy who spent his life buying cars at auction taught me this trick: stick your nose right up to the interior just inside the top of the drivers door and take a good whiff. If it’s ever been smoked in it’ll be most noticeable there.

I wouldn't worry about, like others have posted, have the interior steam cleaned, seats and carpet. Ozium does a great job of getting rid of the smoke smell. It will go away with the right treatment.
