My mother in law has an '18 Tacoma TRD Pro. it has a lot of rust issues on the inside of the cab, under the carpet, bolts, seat belt connectors etc... I am trying to find out if it is possible to know where the truck was prior to her buying it. For example. When I bought my last truck, (not a Toyota) I ordered it and I was able to track where it was every step of the way from when I placed the order to when I drove it off the lot via my VIN number. Does Toyota have a way to do something like that? Thanks in advance.

You can register it on Toyota's website. You should see where it was bought as well as if it was taken in for service at a Toyota dealer. But if you REALLY want to find out where a truck lived you need to pay for an Autocheck or a CarFax

I'm trying to find out specifically if it was in an area that might have flooded and then it was moved/swapped to where she bought it at. Not sure it would be in a carfax if it was done before it was sold. She bought it new with 200~ miles on it.

Sounds like she didn't buy it new. Specifically it sounds like it was a dealer Demo and something happened. The CarFax or Autocheck will still tell you where it was originally registered.

Brand new truck? If so, ask the dealership.
Even better, take it back for warranty. Good luck.

Sounds like it was in a flood to me.

Did she buy it new? If so, Toyota should show where it's been. However, that doesn't mean it didn't get wet inside on a dealer lot and they 'cleaned it up' and still sold it as new. Particularity if it was fresh water flooding and just got to the floor level, sparing the electronics.

On the sticker will be the original dealership it was sent to and what factory made it. I worked at a dealership and a freak rain storm flooded probably 50 brand new cars up past the seats and they pushed them inside after the storm. Gutted the interiors and hung them to dry for a week or so then reassembled and sold as brand new so yes shit happens.

Thats a shady business tactic. Those vehicles should be totaled and sold as such.

If you left your windows down in a 3" rain storm, would you call your insurance and ask for a total? (which they would not grant) Or would you disassemble and dry?

It really depends on how wet, how long, and with what.

Completely different. The dealership knew these vehicles were flooded past the door and sold them as new.

I agree people work hard to afford a new vehicle and shit like that happens. It happened at the end of my shift as I walked out it was pouring monsoons and the lower part of the lot flooded in like 15mins. Luckily I parked in the upper lot that day.

Actually you are wrong, an insurance company probably would total it if there was a lot of water inside if you left the windows down. I have done it lots and lots of times for a few insurance companies. I am an adjuster.
