10K is too much mileage between changes, from what I can see. While the oil still looked great on the dipstick at 7K, at 10K it was dark black and slightly burnt smelling when I drained it this weekend. I'll be changing between 5K and 7K from now on. Nothing scientific in this opinion, but it definitely will help peace of mind to change the oil more frequently, since I plan to keep this truck and pass it on.

5w might be a little cheaper, but think about it like this: A blown-up motor costs way more than a gallon and a half of oil.

Been using 5W-30 ever since I got my taco (17,6XX miles) and never a problem. Actually I feel it runs better on 5-30 than 0-20.

It feels a bit quieter and smoother (engine).

It's simple to quantify 5w-30 vs 0w-20 results

If you think using 5w vs 0w will blow up a motor you need to hand your man card in and go buy a prius.

I know it won’t blow up a motor, I was using hyperbole to make a point. Oil, compared to a truck, is not expensive. Why not use the good stuff?

And I don’t really see what point you’re trying to make about me with that last bit.

they dont spec thinner oil because the tolerances are tighter. It's for better MPG.

Just buy online and be done with it. TGMO is one of the best 20 weight oils on the market.

OP I dont know where exactly in Cali you live and how cold it gets, but unless it gets colder than -22F 5w20 will be fine. Do keep in mind that 0w20 is going to have better cold flow properties, even when not in extreme cold weather and that the base stock on a 0w20 is usually going to be higher quality.

Just ignore Toyota truck specifications, the best in the business worldwide. Toyota just wants you to wear it out sooner so you can buy a new one and repeat. Whew!

The argument about what viscosity is understandable.
But here is the deal. Even if you change your own oil, you must prove (receipts) that you use the recommended oil and filter or the fight starts if you have a warranty issue.
I know why Toyota does this, they want you
to return to dealship for their service.
If you wish to change your own oil, get
ready for lots of proof. Example is receipt
for oil at Walmart for someone else’s car, that receipt does not prove it actually went towards your truck.
So the 5w20 or 0w20 don’t mean shit unless
performed at dealership to cover warranty.
So if Toyota Care is covered with standard
25,000 miles service, it is the other 25k
miles you have to worry about if you do your own oil changes or otherwise 50k under
    Toyota 50k driveline, powertrain warranty.

No it won't lol. They both have a flat viscosity index. They flow the same through normal operating temp range.

0w20 flows better at cold and hot temps, look up data sheets

I'm with you 10k is way too much, the oil might be "fine" but those additives have to be wearing out

I went for my 5000mi yesterday and they wouldn’t change my oil even though I asked. They were 100% certain 10k is good. I know the oils are better then yester year but 10000mi seems way long.
