So I saw a listing on craigslist for a full 285/70/17 mud tires basically 33s with tread. They came off a dodge ram, and are 8 ply. I know that 8 plus are pretty heavy and was wondering if I can run them without straining or messing up my tranny, shifting, gears, etc. if anyone can answer it'd be much appreciated thanks.

Yes. I run a 10 ply tire. No issues. Go for it. They may ride rougher but that's all you'd really notice.

I run 8 ply Yokohama Geolanders on my DC with no issues. They are a little heavier than 6 ply, which is the lowest ply I would run. They are not as stiff as 10 ply and flex well when off-roading.
