Can I put keyed tailgate handle into 01 tacoma and use existing key?

What I have now is unkeyed. Looked around, didn't find anything.

I've heard some mixed reviews on it. Some say it works 75% of the time. I want something that actually locks when I lock it, but this is the only product like this I see on here.

Really not sure if our keys would work with a tailgate but a locksmith would know more than me.

They'd probably rekey the whole thing

 

my question is, is the truck key the same length as the lock key? if not, it may not be able to be matched up. if it is, or willing to try, the lock tumblers would need to be removed and adjusted accordingly. looking at it online it looks to be a giant pain in the ass.

I used one of those for a few years. It worked well but, like 00yotasr5, I got tired of the extra key. I upgraded to the powered Pop & Lock a few months ago, and remain VERY happy with it.

Not that I've seen.

 

I have the powered P&L but some ding dong tried to force the tailgate open when it was locked, therefore: broken handle. Do you think the old fashioned key and lock would work with the power lock? Or should I just buy another OEM handle?

 

That sucks! Thankfully, I haven't had that problem (yet).

Having installed both of my P&Ls, I don't think the old fashioned key and lock will work with the power lock. It's possible you could modify it, but it's probably easier to just buy another OEM handle.

Have you heard of Bolt Locks?
They make padlocks, toolbox locks, cable locks, etc that you set to your truck's key. I'm unsure if their standard lock cylinder can just drop into the tailgate lock, but it's worth giving them a call. I have not bought anything from them yet but I've been eyeing a toolbox latch lock for a while now.

They show chuxtrux as dealer and yota dealer.. Both are close to me.. I'll ask both.
Edit apparently locking handle was never offered.. So ain't gonna happen

 

I don't have any photos, but both installs are pretty simple. Here's the instruction diagram from the powered version:


I didn't try installing the powered one in conjunction with the manual one. The locking mechanisms are dissimilar, though, so I don't think the keyed lock would work with the powered version.

 

I just meant having both at the same time. the keyed one has a lever that rotates up to prevent the handle from coming out. you could probably break the handle if pulled hard enough though
