I'm looking to install a dashcam and I'm considering where I want to hardwire it. The interior fuse box seems a bit tight, so my second option will be the engine fuse box. I saw this little thingy next to the wire port in the firewall… can I use this to put additional wiring through? Looks like I can snip off the rounded tip.

yes, don't' cut that. Just put another small slit in the grommet and route wires through. No issue there.

You can easily use the inside box. I just did cams on my 2010 that way. I'll check tomorrow if you want but I know there are 2 fuses inside that use constant power.

I mean you CAN use the one under the hood but IMO simpler is better.

I always thought that's where the hood pop cable came through. I like how ford gave a few "customer accessory wires" from the factory that already came through the grommets and were blank on both ends. What's $2 worth of wire on a $30k truck, toyota has cheaped out. I made my own hole in the firewall and put a grommet in there, unlimited access to whatever you need, but drilling through the firewall was fun, don't hit anything on the other side :)

You want the hole in whatever grommet you use (if you even need to go outside the cab) to be as small as possible. Many years ago, I used to install hardwired cellphones in cars for Bell Atlantic Mobile (now Verizon)(yes I'm old), and we used to just push the end of a piece of fish tape through the side of a grommet, and pull the wires through. That way the hole was always smaller the the wire being pulled through, and forced the rubber on the grommet to stretch around the wire, giving it a nice tight seal. Didn't even need to use silicone for it.

That would be extremely helpful! I’m assuming you used the stubby fuse taps, then?

Good guess but no. I did source a "low profile" tap (as I've heard the regular one won't allow the door to the box to close) but did not end up needing it in my case.

I have a 2010 regular cab, very bare bones.

The top 2 right hand ones are constant power (Power Outlet and Door Locks, in that order). My truck had fuses in those slots but has neither of those features, so I was able to just pull the fuse, wrap wire around blade, and reinstall. Pardon the mess please :) I still have to wrap up the additional wire and "clean up" stuff.

If your truck has both those features, then yes you would use the low profile tap.

Hope this helps. Let me know what else I can do to assist.

Wire should be blue to match the fuse, right? ;)

Not sure where you were planning on putting it but you could tap into the power wire for the autodimming rearview mirror, 14 models don't have the autodimming mirror but the wiring is there on most trucks behind the overhead console.
Green wire is ignition power, red is constant battery power, and white/black is ground.

I used a metal coat hanger straightened out and with one end pounded flat the sharpened. No phones, but lots of two way radios.

That is all the one wire..like I said I know it's messy, I need to trim it back or use a twistie to secure it. Life has been busy AF lately.
