Can I replace my valve stems without dismounting the tire?

Dumb question has the low pressure light ever came on? with that pressure loss it might be along wait to even see a soap bubble just replace the shredder valve and then see what happens. It will try to launch the old one several feet and the next problem is how to get air back in the tire with no service center around? Lot of work to refill a tire with a handpump.

    Cheers!

Similar here. I use 4x4s, which puts the top of the wheel at a nice height for my hitch to pry against.

So ghetto, hilarious, and awesome. Hahaha!

Anyone can do the job with the right equipment, it takes a real mechanic to figure out how to do the job without it.

Seriously! It is nice to have the tools though. My eyes just water at the cost of good tire changers. Saved a shitton of money on tires and mounting so far.

I just need to figure out what I want to do on the Taco. Dealing with tires shops is getting old, esp with their prices these days. The big deal is balancing. Liquids, DynaBeads / bead blasting media, or AirSoft pellets. I like the TPMS and don't want to destroy the sensors.

@tonered I hear you. One of the few things I miss about my days working as a mechanic is doing that stuff myself. When I put my aftermarket wheels on and sold my stockers I put the sensors in a PVC pipe and pressurized it and it lives in my glovebox.

The sensor bombs are cool, but I do like the system. One of the few gizmos that I actually like.

I like it too, just not enough to buy sensors or the computer to program them.

I agree there. It is weird that some separate device is need to scan the IDs. The Carista app or TechStream can change the IDs in the ECU though.

I didn't realize Carista could do that.

Yeah, but there's a cost associated with the subscription. Could be worth not dealing with a shop though.

If they are on a remote island, they are likely on a very much different time zone.

I subscribed for 3 months when I first got my truck then canceled as I didn't have much purpose for it after that.

If anyone wants to borrow my Autel TPMS tool, you're welcome to. Just pay for round trip shipping. I use it twice a year for snow tire swaps, and occasionally for other random TPMS stuff. Otherwise it just sits in the garage 99.97% of the time.

It's frustrating that auto makers have never tried to make TPMS more user friendly. Why not let it store 8 IDs (better yet 10 so the spare is included) for summer and winter tires? And is making the sensor part of the valve stem really the best way to do it? Maybe it is, so why not etch the ID on the outside of the valve stem so we can read it without a special scanner? Then if a sensor fails the car could tell you, "no reading from sensor 56AR4GH2" or whatever it is, and you could see which one to replace. It would also be nice if the car could automatically learn new sensors. Seems like it's not hard for it to notice, hey this random sensor has been following me around for a while, it must be the one to read.

@M85 thank you for the offer. I really should do more research on getting them back to actually being in the wheels. From what I've read there's aftermarket sensors that can be cloned to mimic the ID numbers of the stock ones so it's easier to swap out.

I cloned some Autel MX sensors from Amazon so I can swap out wheels without changing anything else. The only "issue" is that when you are close to the other set of wheels/tires the TPMS gets confused and bounces between the pressure values. It fixes itself as soon as you drive away from the other sensors.

@dilbert that's what I've heard. I'd store the set not being used pretty far from where the truck goes. I probably should look into it more.

Agreed. I accidently forgot to cancel the trial and had a 1yr subscription that I only used a handful of times. Definitely a handy app though.
