Put the weight in the trailer and not in the truck. Saves your payload rating. Unless you plan on taking a few showers you damn sure don't need 20 gallons of water in the trailer. I don't carry any water because we'll be stopping for fuel soon enough for anyone to use the bathroom.

That's the issue with Tacoma's. That 1000 lbs is exactly what you think it means.

The higher number online is the payload for the lightest, most stripped down 2wd version.

and at the rear of the camper to keep the weight off the tounge.

i never carried water either until our last trip. put about 20 gallons in so we could use the bathroom and wash hands afterwards. it was great. will be doing that from here on out. saved a ton of time and we had our private restroom... and who knows what bathroom at rest stops will even be open in the future with all this covi stuff going on.

Its not really a Tacoma issue as much as it is an understanding of these are midsize trucks. Other than the Gladiator I think you would be hard pressed to find a "crew cab" 4wd midsize with more than 1200lbs real world payload. Most half tons are about 1600lbs real world. My '14 DC Tundra was 1430lbs. The newer Tundras with the larger 38 gallon tank are same GVWR with 12 gallons of more fuel, so most of those say 1300lbs-ish. A friend of mine has a F250 diesel crew cab long bed for a work truck, 10,000lbs GVWR, payload is 2400lbs. 7300lb truck plus fluids and options. It is what it is. Bigger toys require bigger trucks to tow them. We are looking at 2800-3300lb travel trailers ourselves. Loaded GVWR on trailer around 4000-4500lbs give nearly 2000lbs of "cushion" on the tow rating but 450lbs of tongue weight.

Correct it's not just a Tacoma thing but this is a Tacoma board and we are discussing a Tacoma towing here so other mid size trucks don't really matter right now.

It just seems like every one of these towing threads somebody or multiple somebodies state that it is a Tacoma issue, I was just pointing out that it is common in the class, not specifically our beloved trucks.

Does the gas in my tank count towards that 1000 pound payload?

No. That payload is everything you put in the truck. The reason you saw a higher number online then the door is the number on the website doesn't count fluids or options. The number in the door is your curb weight as in everything the truck came with from the factory and a full tank of fuel.

So whats the payload on a typical sedan or crossover SUV?

What you are saying is that if four 300 pound dudes want to take a ride together they need a tundra not a tacoma

or maybe "take a ride together" in a bicycle group...

but seriously a 300 pound dude would struggle to sit in the back seat of a Tacoma in any case

and even in a Tundra that's 1200 pounds of manbeast; you'd probably exceed the payload capacity in that with some camping gear

The wife and I have been looking at campers lately also. I’ve tried searching and haven’t been able to find a thread of campers members are pulling. Does anyone know of any?

You can tow anything you want if you're brave enough.

Kidding, don't do that. But get yourself a WDH and Brake Controller. (Or a Tundra )

My Tacoma only has 100 lbs more payload than my other vehicle which is a Honda Accord (Accord is 850, Tacoma is 950). Yes. I think issue is the appropriate term.

Note. I do like my Tacoma, and would buy it again, they are just a bit limited in capability.

exactly. the tacoma is a nice truck. really liked ours but the reality of it is the Tacoma is just not a full size truck and shouldn't be treated as one.

tons of great towing information pops up here.. you can also search the files for the spread sheets on how to determine if a trailer is within your trucks specs...

Payloads aren't that great until you get into 3/4 ton and up. Even the Powerwagon got a real world payload of around 1500lbs. My DCLB is 950lbs, our TRD Pro 4runner is 850, my 2009 Matrix S AWD was 750, and my Tundra was 1430. Saying its a Tacoma issue makes it sound like a Colorado got a 2000lb payload, not the 1100lb payload they actually have. Our payload is about the same as a second gen Raptor, talk about limited capability.

Here's a door sticker from a 2019 Raptor. This is being discussed with anger on one of the Ford forums.

edit: it was posted in a Tremor thread but was actually somebody's Raptor

With that low of tongue weight, most of the weight being PULLED.... if it has decent brakes, and with a good brake controller, hell yeah you can tow it no worries
