I am looking to buy a used 2006 Tacoma from a private party. The seller is the parent of the driver of the truck and doesn't recall what model Tacoma her kid has. The VIN is 3TMJU62N86M******

From this I can tell it is:

    3 - Mexico (source)
    T - Toyota (mfg)
    M - Truck (type)
J - Double Cab (Body Type)
    U - 1GR-FE (engine)
    6 - TRN260, TRN265, GRN265 (Series)
2 - DLX, DX, XLE, Sport, Limited (Grade)
    N - Tacoma (Line)
    8 - Super Secret # (Check)
    6 - 2006 (Year)
    M - Baja (Plant)

From this info can I tell whether this Tacoma is an SR5, Off Road or Sport?

you should be able to take that VIN to a dealer and have them print off all the factory options

I called one dealer and he was not able to tell me that info. Thanks, I'm sure you are right about being able to do that. I'll check with another dealer.

I did run the VIN at an online parts source and it looks like some of the options are coming up as "Street Package" which would indicate "Sport"

K&N intake. That is all. For now...
If i'm correct the Sport's came with hood scoops. I was told by the dealer that the Off-Road's do not have that option and the only way to get it was buy the hood separately and paint it to match...

Yes, I know how to tell which model it is by looking at the truck. I have not seen it and there are no pics. The registered owner (seller) is the grandparent that knows nothing about it and is not in posession of it at the time. I plan to drive 150 miles next week to go have a look at it when it becomes available for sale. I am just trying to get as much info on it in the next few days so I know what to expect when I get there.

The vin should note every option when it left the factory, all the way down to the color of the ashtray. It will not note any accessories the dealer adds, floor mats, decals, wheels or tires and so on.

That dealer sounds like a tool. I would visit a local dealer and tell them you are buying one private party and want all the options for it. I did this a few years ago on a vehicle I had.
