The skoop automagically gives +10% horsepower when driving on pavement. In the sand it gives me -7 agility..

Yeah, 4wd will be able to do more, but my Grandpa used to take his base model Tacoma on "4wd" rated trails. Just use common sense.

No. On highspeed desert fireroads.........sure. But when it gets rocky, muddy, snowy it's not going to keep up. Plain and simple. Tons of responses already from 2WD owners claiming all the places they can go without 4WD. Good for you but if you're really "off-roading" you're NOT going to keep up with anything with 4WD. The dunes is the only place I can even think of that I couldn't take a FWD Saturn sedan that really differs from the kind of terrain most of the 2WD Tacomas are going. Fireroads are a blast in a truck, but you can drive just about any car down them.

    Flame on. ;)

What mods would be recommended for some moderate off-roading with a 2wd prerunner trd sport with a 2in leveling kit and 33" tires? woukd the supercharger help a lot? any way to add dif-lock i turn off traction control but i dont think the sport has d-lock? i want to go in soft sand and through some "puddles". keep in mind i live in orlando so there isnt much climbing or big rocks to climb over.

whats your budget? If your truck doesn't have a diff lock you can add one, but its big $$$.

good tires helps a lot, and wheeling with someone w/ a 4wd is key.

My opinion is, no. Unfortunately no matter what, at some point in time while off-road. You will encounter an obstacle where you will not be able to " push " your truck over the obstacle and you will need the truck's front tires to "Grab" in order to make it up and over. even through mud at some point or depth the truck will not be able to simply plow through. Sand I have seen Honda civic's lowered and street bikes while riding out in the dunes. I could take a 1970 chimo van to the dunes, air down the tires and never get stuck. Sand all you must do is air down your tires. Sand A/T's are the best because your not trying to chop through it, you want to stay on top. smoother tires like A/Ts perform much better in sand. If your just wheeling sand 2wd should be Bueno!

Yes, indeed... BUT at a high speed to climb... and that could cause damage. 4WD allows you to cruise up grades at a slow, safe speed and not break things. But, it is better to have the locker than not. The white truck I pulled to the top did not have a locker. He tried the AUTO LSD, but actually got further up in the VSC OFF MODE (open differential).

I really like his final point! For me since my truck is 95% of the time on paved roads 4wd would be waste of money, thats why I opted for the PreRunner with the TRD off road package. The locker is awesome and can get me through stuff normal 2wd would not go through...

I'm sure you could get toyota to put one in...but that would be HUGE money.

Check out ARB lockers. They are pneumatic-controlled, and you will also need an OBA (on board air) system to power the locker.

Probably around $900 for the locker and $600 for the OBA kit *roughly* Then labor if you don't do it yourself.

There are a lot of other options out there, but he ARB is probably the most popular option. Search around you will find a lot of info out there.

Are you thinking of doing the Cleghorn run on Nov. 5th? Can't be any harder than Diablo Dropoff backwards, you think?
