Native Floridian here, making a trip up to NC where our rental property suggests a 4wd or AWD vehicle to make it up driveway. No snow or icy roads expected at this time of year. What gear should I put it in to make sure it can make the climb? Or do you think it won't make it at all?

    Thanks

Unless your driveway is a sand dune i really cant picture it not being passable in D.

Consider turning traction control off the first time.

That might be for clearance reasons too, and there you're good!

My old "84 2wd toyota truck made it up a pretty steep incline on a road that was the back way out of Chaco Canyon. It took some work and I had to make my nephews and their friends get out and walk up. Do you have a picture of the drive?

I have been on many trails where it is suggested to have 4WD or AWD and never had a problem in a 2WD vehicle. Only way to tell is to actually have a look though.

I've made it up some sketchy hills. Turn off the trac control and use some momentum

Without snow, sand, or huge rocks I'm sure you will be fine, like someone else said it's probably more of a clearance issue than anything. Loose gravel might give you a bit of a hard time but you should be fine.

You would be surprised what a 2wd truck can do if you are determined. I remember when my friend lived on a Mountain, and her drive was very steep. One winter, that whole mountain froze, and every time she went home, it took several tries to get up the drive, but she made it every time. If it won't go right up, back up and gain more momentum before you try again.

I took my truck (2WD) up some steep dirt hills here in AZ... it will make it if it’s paved and dry... if it’s wet with snow.. it will come down to the tires you have on it.. not saying it will make it for sure... but like mentioned before.. some momentum always helps

I only got stuck once with a 2wd ranger in the 5 or 6 years I drove it and it was coming up my parents drive when it was a sheet of ice. The incline starts on a curve so no way to gain momentum and afterward my father said he meant to tell me his 4wd backhoe couldn't make it up. That said I prefer 4wd just in case I ever do need it.

Depends on the drive, the condition of the moment and a couple of other things.

I've had issues in a gravel drive (RR bed rock) that was freshly laid to level, but filling deep ruts and such. In a car with plenty of power, but trying to move from a stop.

Same gravel conditions on a step grade with a heavy rain and caution should abound.

It "may" be worth a walk up before you bomb it. Just to be sure you don't find surprises around the bend. Like a big tree limb in the way or a washed out edge by a ditch.

You'll know then what to do.

Probably just a disclosure meant for winter. I'm sure a camry can do it.

Sounds like you'll need a 4x4 conversion, some armor, and a winch. Don't think you'll make it otherwise
