My guess is that you are hearing piston slap. I believe this was common on the 4.7L engines and less common on the 4.0,...but still possible. it goes away once the engine warms a bit right? I don't know that it is anything to worry about. Someone else may know more.

Mines been black since I got it at 95,000, it’s even made my fender flare become permanently stain black. Any way to lean them out, like getting an aftermarket ecu? Just curious

I have heard of this before on TW, and it doesn't sound like there is a fix... Just a characteristic of the engine. I can deal with this as long as it is not a fatal flaw of the engine, which it sounds like it is not. I have seen many people surpassing 200,000 miles with no issues. My oil consumption is what concerned me to begin with, and the reason I started this thread. I just happened to notice this morning how black the exhaust tip was inside. I guess 1/2 quart in 5,000 miles isn't terrible, it is just not what I expected. Oh well, if I get 250,000 miles then I am happy. Unfortunately, this all started after my warranty expired. Then again, maybe it is a blessing because I don't want anyone tearing into my engine at 55,000 miles.

I burn about 1/2 a quart in 5000 miles too. My GFs father is a mail man and damn you want to talk about oil consumption!!

Is it possible that you may have a diffeent EPA blend of fuel.
    I'm in Connecticut.
I also use Pennzoil Platinum 5/30..Mainly use Citgo fuel. Sometimes Sunoco sometimes Shell.
Out of state I try to find a Sunaco or Shell.
    I never use off brands

Mine’s golden black - I may buy one of Toyota’s tips to hide it, but it’s just another thing to clean if I do...

I am all over the map on this one. I purchase gas at the cheapest location and use Walmart special oil, usually SuperTech oil and filter.

Nice and sooty. Before i put a down turn (and later chopped before axle), it would spray black crap on the garage wall on start up. Dang thing runs rich in the cold. About 1/3 qt oil consumption with every oil change.
Go out every now and then on the highway and give it a WOT run (think merging from a rolling start).

274k and mine has a light knock on cold start up, I've had several Toyotas that do this, is common and a non issue.
and yes, there is soot in the tail pipe, not heavy, but there. Most of it comes from cold start up, the catalyst isn't hot enough to burn off the excess fuel needed for cold start, so there is always a small amount of soot/unburnt fuel

My truck had a clean tip when I bought it. I started to notice the soot after I put a header on. Added a supercharger and cleaned it, and it’s back to sooty.

A few additions to make me feel cool.
This is not a fuel issue. I only use Costco gas, run Lucas fuel system cleaner through it every 5k and use Amsoil so that's about the best you can do. The 4.0 just runs rich.

FYI: My friend works at a Fuel distributor. Many other companies like his. They all come for the same tanks , just a different Additive to the different stations. When was the last time you saw a Shell or Mobile gas truck??? If you do , its not at a station, they are bringing the additives to places like my friend works.
