Just been thinking about this before I order the power tailgate lock/unlock kit.
It seems a person could crawl under truck, cut wires "they know which ones" and activate the tailgate unlock.
I'm just looking for some clarification on this matter, without having one installed on our Tacoma I was thinking someone here may know.

Yes, but you'd have to know which one, and not all tacomas have that feature.

The way they are routed you really wouldn't be able to spot the wires.

    Do it, its worth it.

If it’s a thief involved, more likely that they would either drill the lock or pound a screwdriver into the key slot. Don’t be mislead thinking the tailgate lock is 100% security.

edit: I installed the oem power lock and love it.

Hello Bishop84, the wife is interested in adding the lock/unlock feature. I'm ok installing it but from what I have seen in DIY Youtube videos it appears obvious which wires control the lock. I've always been cautious, maybe too much in this case. Thanks for response..

Me thinks you are sweating this a bit too much. Lock it / take reasonable precautions is all you can really do! And if that ain't enough to stop the boogy man, then that's what insurance is for.

Is the powerlock really that much more convenient than using the standard key. Are you in and out, locking and unlocking your tailgate multiple times a day? Seems like just another thing to fail in my opinion...

I don’t carry the key with me all the time. I did the Lexus credit card key and never got the card key cut. Before the power lock if I knew I was going to need to lock the tailgate I would have to remember to grab the key.

Maybe it’s lazy, I call it convenience.

More likely to have someone get in because you got forgot to lock manually or didn't feel like it. Power lock, every time you click the clicker it'll be locked. My old tech school teacher always said it's just to keep an honest man honest, you can't stop the real thieves if you're not there

I think you're just overthinking it. Fact is, if they want it bad enough, they'll get it. Most won't go that far.

I have total faith that it defeats the opportunistic thief, who has no tools. First, all he/she knows is that it is locked. He/she doesn’t know that it has an electric lock. Then, even if he/she knows it is electric, knowledge of how to actuate it is not necessarily at hand. Also, the electric lock assures that the tailgate is locked anytime one locks the doors, which is just about always. Without it, you have to check, or you may think it’s locked, but it may not be.

You can always buy one of those tailgate locks for extra security and piece of mind if you are paranoid about it .

I have one on mine. But I have a good backstory. Coming from a Saab, I assumed that Toyota would have a locking tailgate. You know like every other truck out there. Along with a windshield washer fluid level warning. LOL! My wife's $10k+ road bike was in the back under the tonneau and we left to watch a movie. Still there when we got back. A few weeks later I stumbled across the power lock tailgate thread...my heart stopped for a minute or longer when I remembered what I had done. Immediately ordered the lock kit. Whew... Love it. Another great cheap upgrade.

I’m pretty sure your truck already had a locking tailgate.

    Absolutely it is worth it.

There are a zillion things on the truck that can and will fail, one more actuator is not going to matter.

Well technically yes, but not a power locking one...and only if you actually locked it! LOL.
