Can someone give me a real world experience with 4.56 gear ratio running 35s?

    I cant seem to find the answer I'm looking for anywhere. Please Help......
    Was it worth it?
    What highway mpg you're getting?
    would you do anything different if any?

    I am running 285/75/17 (about 33.5 on truck and on the ground) w/4.56. I went 4.56 as I felt it would be a good balance. I would also like to move to an Atlas with a 3.8 or 4.33 low. If I was to go up to 35's (probably 34 when mounted and on the ground) I would do 4.88's as the tire will also be heavier and likely wider, going to 35's means the balance of use would be even more towards offroad. As far as MPG goes at this point it is one thing no longer going to be used as a determining factor. But so far all highway (think Hwy15 Barstow to Vegas) I see about 15-16 at a steady 70-75mph.

    I figure 4.56 because I spent most of the time on the Highway and go wheeling from time to time. I do tow a boat too. If I could get 15 or 16 going 70-75mpg im fine with that, better than what I get now. How did you do the regear and after everything how much was it total?

    If you are spending most of your time on the highway I would reconsider doing 35's. Cost: I did front and rear with REM finished gears, front locker and a 10year warranty and hear in SoCal it was about $4600

    Wow... 4600 for front lockers too is not too bad. I been having 35s (34.7) to be accurate for a little while now just haven't done the regear. First I was looking into getting 4.88, but I seen posts that their rpm is high when doing about 70-75mph. I normally do 70 on highway, just want something more balanced with a little better performance offroad. If you had the option to redo your regear would you jump up to 4.88?

    Not with the 285/75/17's. If I wanted to go 35's or 315/70/17's going to a lower gear would all be part of the decision to make the truck a more dedicated off roader. If I get to the point of wanting a dedicated off road rig I would do a completely different build and it would most likely not be a Tacoma.

    35's with 4.56's will spin right at 7% more rpms for the same mph than 3.73's and stock sized tires. So if it takes 2000rpms to go 65mph in top gear locked stock, it will take 2140 rpms for 4.56's and 35's so not much different.

    If you plan on getting 15-16mpg at 70-75 mph with 35's I got a great piece of land to sell you out in this beautiful place called the salton sea.

    haha.....I'm hoping to get 15-16mpg, I'm getting about 14 mpg doing 70 mpg on 35s with stock gearing, but mpg is not why I want to regear. Figures 4.56 would be closer to stock so that would be a better option for me.

    I'm getting 13.9mpg (mileage corrected via GPS) city/highway with 4.56, D-rated 35x10.5 Kendas, a full load of armor, and a 23" contractor shell. Probably would be a little higher if so much hadn't been mountain driving and/or I wasn't usually cruising at 75-80mph. Also guessing I'd get a half-MPG or more back without that shell, based on my experience going from a Softopper to it.

    edit: Nerdy shit! The calcs remove any intervals where I went wheeling/campin/etc from the overall City/Hwy MPG, because it'll artifically drive the number down.

    I'm happier with 4.56 with the 35s than the skinny 33s, because my RPMs are lower at highway speeds. I imagine that I'd feel overgeared during "normal" highway driving with the 4.88s, just as I was with my old tires.

    I'm on 35s E rated yokahama geolander MTs sitting around 6600-6900lbs (stupid heavy with front and rear bumpers, BAMF skids, drifter, spare tire, etc).
    I went with 4.88 for better gearing offroad. In hindsight, i would've been ok with 4.56 gearing for a better on-road experience. 4.88 isnt terrible but on longer drives going faster than 70-75 or keeping speed up a grade isn't the most fun experience. Its loud, uses up extra gas, and RPMs are higher than I like. Overall, 4.88 is great off-road but with as much highway driving I do (even just to/from trails), I would go 4.56 if i did it again.

    Thanks, that exactly the answer I was looking for. I just want a little better performance on highway and offroad. More highway of course. I appreciate all the feedback. I think I'm set on getting 4.56 ratio now. Just need that extra confirmation from the Community. Awesome!!
