This exact thing happened to me a few months back. Not sure when (or how) it happened, but I noticed a rattle in the rear. Came home and the shock pierced through the top of the boot and sheared off the bolt. Gnarly. Got both rears replaced for consistency. Mine were about five years old.

Interestingly enough I managed to find out the shocks i bought from Down south MS back when I did were a private label model exclusively made for RCD suspension at the time.
Not sure if that has any effect on actual quality of the shock at the time but they are next on my contact list.
