Howdy,I I'm trying to figure out if the Hypertech device actual recalibrates the ecu or just sends a false reading to the dash speedometer wire.

Could someone with a Hypertech installed hook up an OBD reader and drive with the cruise control set and compare the speed reading you get from the OBD to the speed displayed on the dash speedometer?

If the speeds don't match, the Hypertech isn't doing anything different than a Dakota box that costs 1/3 as much. If the speeds match, I'm ordering a Hypertech asap! :)

If you use an Elm327 and a phone app, make SURE you disable location/GPS on your phone so that you get a speed reading from the ecu, not GPS.

    Thanks in advance!

I'm just about to install a Hypertech In-Line speedometer calibrator (730117) in my 2015. May take a few days but I'll try to get the OBD readings for you. Recently moved up to 285/70-17s and speedometer/odometer are currently about 7% off.

Probably won't get to install it until this weekend, but will post the results as soon as possible.

Based on how the Hypertech is installed, I'm fairly sure that it just adjusts the signal to your dash cluster instead of overwriting your ecu. I installed mine and i had to take the dash cluster out and youll install the board between the ribbon cable and your dash cluster.

Got the Hypertension in-line speedometer calibrator installed yesterday. Initial comparisons with a GPS show it speed and distance are within 1%; was 7.2% prior to install. I could take it back out to fine tune the setup, but I'm satisfied with it for now. Would be easier to do using a laptop, if I had one.

I attempted to check it against the OBD2 reader but when I connected the reader I immediately got error lights; the tachometer and speedometer needles were jumpin around sporadically , and the trip meters and odometer were not working. Disconnected the OBD2 reader and everything functioned normally again. Perhaps the Hypertech unit is negatively affected by the OBD2 reader. Could just be my OBD2; been a while since I used it.

In any case, JustAddMud is right; the in-line calibrator has no affect on the ECU, it only corrects the display.

The thing with the Hypertech is that you need to hook it up to your laptop initially to setup the calibrator. Its defaulted to some Alpha or Audi or something that starts with an A. Youll have to use the software to set it to your vehicle. In my case, I had to select my year Tacoma as well as input my stock tire size and the new tire size. The calibrator does all the work for you. At speeds less than 60mph, it was basically dead on as compared to my Garmin. Once I get above those speeds it will be wrong by about 3 to 4 mph, but at this point, it doesnt matter that much as long as the speedo is close enough. I tend to drive with the addage "9 your fine, 10 your mine" as in 9mph over the limit. My speedo displays that I'm going faster than I really am at higher speeds so I don't even think about it. It was worth the purchase, though if i was going to do the install again, I would purchase a 6 ft USB chord and connect it to the calibrator and secure the loose end somewhere around the base of the steering wheel. That way if I change tire size I dont have to take my dash apart to adjust the calibrator.
