My '07 alloy wheels are corroded to shit. Can I get them stripped and powder coated or are they done?

hmmmm... tbh it would be cheaper and better to buy some off here some guys are really cool about letting go of stock rims for good prices.

I actually bought a set of those wheels to use for winter that looked just like that. With enough sanding and some duplicator wheel paint, you can make them look pretty good.

I have new wheels. I want to sell my old ones. I'm curious if it's even worth trying.

Thanks. It was actually a lot more work than I expected, but I'm happy with them though.

I assume it's from salt and not being washed often enough. The ones I bought were from a 2009 and looked just like the op's. It has something to do with the finish too. The face of the wheels weren't bad, but the painted area between the spokes had the paint flaking off and was really pitted.

They use some chemical mix up here in Rockland County, NY to de-ice the roads. Apparently it's considered "safe" for the environment ... but it'll strip the plating off your wheels and turn your frame to dust. :annoyed: It's gotta be that or the Armor All Tire Foam I use every so often.o_O

Are you sure? Have you had experience with such a situation? I'd hate to get my hopes up. Thinking I'll keep the wheels as a backup if I can get them powder coated for cheap.

When they powdercoat the rims they have to heat them up to over 400 so they can sandblast the the clearcoat off. They will come out like new.

It's duplicolor wheel paint. The colour is "graphite." Very easy to apply too...the prep work was a pain in the ass though.

What all did you do to prep the wheels?

There are wheels like that in excellent condition for sale all the time, on here or craigslist or wherever. You should be able to find a like new pair for cheap...like $200 or less.

If it were me, I would just try to find some lightly used ones instead of dealing with all that. Post a "want to buy" thread in the market place and ask in your local bs thread if anybody has some. Lots of people don't even try to sell them because the market is so saturated.

With those specific wheels? No. With other styles of wheels and other items such as architectural components, car/truck/motorcycle parts, and industrial fabrications? Yes. Its a very simple and reliable process that results in a finish that is generally more durable than paint.

Your wheels will likely be fine after a media blast and powder coat but I agree with Vandal on finding another set. I found an extra set of Sport rims (from an '09) on Craigslist for $100! They were in much better shape that my '06 set.

I paid $275.00 for a local powder coat shop to blast and powder coat them in gloss black. Turn-around time was 5 days.

I removed the chrome Toyota emblem from the '09 center caps, painted the plastic with Rustoleum Gloss Black Engine Block rattle can paint. Then snapped the chrome emblems back in.

After looking at countless after market rim options and styles, I'm really happy I with the powder coated factory wheel. Love the look of this wheel in gloss black. For $375.00 total investment I can't complain either.
