Hey guys, first time poster and first time tacoma owner, i just bought an 03 and i love it but i want to do something more with it. Now i know a 4wd swap would be fairly simple, but i was wondering if doing an awd cross over would be possible?

I think it would require a ton of fab work/new parts and be way more work than it's worth - you'll need a center diff if you want awd, and these trucks never came with a center differential.

See thats what i was wondering. Im really wanting to turn it into a rally truck, lift it a little level it out put some meaty tires and decent rims and four wheel it one way or another

Weld a bed to a 4 Runner would probably be easier

Why couldn't you put 4R'er running gear under the truck? If they're AWD that is.

And if that's what you really want. We had an AWD van for a kayak business and granted it was old when we got it but in loose sand a lot, it didn't take long to burn out the center diff.

    Depends on your budget $$$$$

If it is large enough it can be done .

The downside because of the Fabrication stock extra parts unless you want to wait weeks till they are built

99-00 limited and 01-02 4runners have a multi mode tcase that is capable of AWD along with 2wd and true 4wd. There is some wiring involved and the tcase is longer so you will need different length driveshafts.

I have one behind my 4.7. it's fun.

So its worth the trouble then? Im really wanting to build a sick looking rally truck that has some power and i think awd is the way to go if its worth it

"It's worth it" depends on your ability to perform the work and your budget and finding parts that are cheap.

For me, it is. I collected parts over a few years and the truck has not been my DD for years, so if it's down for a while, no big deal. It's definitely not a weekend project.

anything is "worth it" if you have the knowledge, skill, time, and money to get it working :D

Thats exactly what i plan to do. At this point in time im just getting opinions, it is my DD for now, but there are a lot of things im going to do to it before i do the awd conversion. I plan on taking my time and doing a lot of research on it

99-00 limited 4runners have a j shift pattern multi mode tcase, but it needs a vacuum ADD motor. The 01-02 4runners have a forward and back shift tcase with a button on the dash to unlock the center diff. 01+ use electric ADD motors.

Just search 4runnet multi mode tcase and you will find all kinds of stuff on T4r.org.

IIRC from my trips to Africa, the Hilux comes in AWD with locking center diff (4WD).

I got a 4.0 v6 with a A750F trans and a t case from a 06 4runner. As I understand it, it has awd with a center diff lock. I will be installing it into a 99 taco reg cab. The problem will be wiring more than anything. The 4 runner has vtrac, down hill assist, and a lot of other crap. I wanted to see how many miles it had, so i tried to install the dash gauges in my 06 taco. They look the same but the 4runner had 4 plugs and the taco had 2. I have looked at the tcase it did not look any different than that of the 06 tundra that was only 4x4. So the issues will be wiring more than anything else, and how much one will have to use. I am looking forward to the challenge. The firs steps may be getting electrical wiring diagram manuals.

I am parting out a 2002 4Runner that has multimode AWD if you are interested.
