Will do, I'm still looking for a shop that doesn't try and rape me on labor.

Yea 4.88's is gonna be it. People are wanting damn near the price of 4.88's for used 4.30's. So may as well just do 4.88's and 285 tires

My price that I offered you for my 4.30 gears was less than 50% of cost brand new with free shipping... No where near $1500 for both my ring and pinions. Just saying.

Toyota does also make 4.56 gears. As has come up though, Toyota gears are not cheap.

That's correct but they are also close to the price of the 4.88's and you still have to buy an install kit. I just figure if it's close to the price of 4.88's might as well do them.

IDK all about 3rd gens. But if you are going from a stock 31" tire to only a 32" and feel the need to regear then do not go all the way up to 4.88's You will be way overgeared. The 4.30 will still raise your RPM even on a bigger 32" tire.

    Just so you understand;
A 31" (stock) tire with 3.91's at a 1.1 ratio trans gear should turn the engine 2755 RPM's. Then if you step up to a 32" tire with 4.88 gears with the same 1.1 trans gear ratio will have your engine turn 3331 RPM's. That's almost 600 RPM higher and you'll be wasting a lot of gas. If 4.11's are made for your truck are probably optimal but 4.30's is plenty close enough.

Most of these gear charts are for Jeeps and don't necessarily translate well for other vehicles. As a Jeep guy I thought 4.88 would be overkill..its not.

    This chart is way off.

I'd have to be going about 100 mph to get close to this RPM. At 65mph our rpms are around 1500..

The Tacoma has a double overdrive. 4.88's with 32" tires would be fine.

I think you should buy a Manual Transmission instead.

No thanks, when it takes a manual transmission to make the truck work I will get a different truck.

I forgot I'm in a 3rd gen thread! It's obvious to me that you neither one of you DID NOT read what I typed or the article that I linked. IF you had then you would have figured out what was meant when I said that those ratios are in a 1.1 trans gear. Go ahead and regear to 4.88's. I know nothing

I sure did, we don't drive our trucks at 65mph in 3rd gear, so its pretty much irrelevant.

The 2.7 auto has the 8" rear axle and 4.30 gear ratio , so they will work fine.

I agree, am I missing something here? 1.1 is forth gear on a 3rd gen, why does it matter what it's turning in 3rd gear?

I feel just the opposite, if it has to be an automatic trans, then there is another vehicle for me. Although, some time probably soon manual trans will be a thing of the past.

It kind of already is, very few models across all brands offer a manual trans.

Yea to each their own. I guess I'm to lazy to be shifting gears all the time.

So you want to regear because your transmission downshifts on hills? Seems like you're going at it the hard/expensive way to fix a problem that isn't really a problem...

Automatic transmissions are designed to shift into whatever gear is best for a given scenario. Since the 3rd Gen Tacoma's have a double overdrive, 6th really is designed just for high speed/low load scenarios like cruising down the interstate, to deliver the best fuel economy. If the truck comes under a load (like, for instance, climbing a hill) it will downshift. It's not a flaw in the design, it's the nature of the design itself.

Regearing to numerically higher ratios like that will give you more power, but you're going to be revving higher everywhere you go. As a result, you're going to have more engine noise & burn more gas, and the regear will throw your speedometer off.

Seems like it would make a lot more sense financially to just let the transmission do its job. Or, if you don't like listening to it shift out of sixth, just put it in Tow/Haul or Sport and lock out 6th gear if you're going to be traveling in hilly terrain, and it won't shift as much. Zero added expense; you're simply utilizing another design feature of the truck, for more or less the purpose it was intended. :notsure:

Boy you guys really don't get it do you? Gearing is mechanical and will not change, meaning that they are the same no matter what vehicle you are talking about (Jeep or Toyota) as long as you are using the same transmission gear so that is the reason that the 1.1 trans gear is referenced. I know your truck has an overdrive but what I am trying to tell you is if your truck is running at 1500 RPM in drive at 65 MPH and regear to 4.88's then you will be revving higher at 65 MPH and wasting gas. That is a fact
