    Yes, that's literally the point people regear in 3rd gens. There is no low-end torque and some people don't want to floor it all the time to be in the power-range.

    True but not a lot. I think the reported RPM change at 75 or 85mph is about 250 rpms. Thats negligible and not worth arguing.

    People with larger tires have also reported a gain in mpg...

    I have 4.30 gears stock on my SR 2.7 4 Cylinder. I just installed 265/75 tires and didn't really notice too much of a difference of power loss.

    OP please relax..

    May be negligible but you have a different final drive ratio.

    People shouldn't post in gear threads unless they understand the double overdrive. This is not like any other toyota pickup or 4Runner. I maintain that I'd prefer 4.88's on a stock tire sized 16+.

    OP:
    In your current setup you're probably turning around 1800 RPM's at 75mph.
    265/75R16 @ 75mph in 6th
    3.90's = 1800RPM
    4.30's = 1985RPM
    4.88's = 2250RPM

    285/75R16 @ 75mph in 6th
    3.90 = 1736RPM
    4.30 = 1914RPM
    4.88 = 2172RPM

    Now, this is based on your 6th gear ratio of .58; your 5th gear ratio is .69. 265/75R16's at 75mph in 5th gear works out to 2142RPM, which is nearly identical to the 2172 that you'll have if you switch to 4.88's and 285's.

    My advice to you, OP, before you bother spending time, money, and effort on regearing your truck and buying bigger tires would be to go out and drive your truck with it locked into 5th, and see if the extra 400 RPM's or so annoy you. If they do, DON'T regear. If they don't bother you, go for it.

    Though as a disclaimer I still think it's a waste of afore-mentioned time, money, & effort when all you need to do to fix your perceived problem is just push a button and lock out 6th gear when you think it's shifting too much. This solution lets you have the extra power and fewer shifts when you want it, while keeping the higher MPG's when you're just cruising along and don't need the extra oomph.

    Yes but I have a 4 banger, has no power whatsoever. It drives just fine with 265s and the ECT button helps like it should on the highway.

    I also have p rated 265 tires, LT/E are overkill for this light weight underpowered truck.

    I think that's what he's going for. He doesn't like the way it is stock and so wants to change the gearing. There are plenty of reasons to change gearing besides changing the tire size on a vehicle.

    Exactly, I feel the truck is geared to high from the factory. That's the real issues with gen3 tacomas. Toyota was so focused on getting better gas mileage they forgot about how shitty it made the truck feel.

    That would be all fine if it would stay here n 6th for more than 30 seconds or so. The slitest up grade or wind and it's down shifting constantly. And when a truck has to down shift twice to go up a hill something isn't right.

    I mean I agree with the gearing being to high with the 6 speed transmission. 5th and 6th are actually overdrive. Mine will pop out of 6th and downshift to 4th or 5th on the smallest inclines doing 70mph. I actually just let myself slow down to 60 and then let the decline pick the truck back up to 70 lol. This damn tranny.

    This Tacoma is completely different in that it has a double overdrive. The charts reflect 1 to 1 because it's a constant and easy to calculate. They say gear three because in the old days all automatic transmissions were three speeds and position three would be 1 to 1 . The Tacoma double overdrive , gear four is 1 to 1.

    My truck has a double overdrive as well, but the OD ratios are .86 & .69 hooked up to 3.55's in back.
    I don't actually have a 1:1 gear, though, as 4th is 1.14:1.

    But, it also doesn't shift back and forth on hills, which is nice.

    Mostly that the Tacoma isn't 'completely different' because it has a double overdrive. Most trucks have them now. But some of them do have them mapped out better. Part of why I ended up in an F150 is because I wasn't impressed with the Tacoma's geabox. :notsure:

    I think it's going to be a bigger change in rpms, I did a smaller jump from 4.30 to 4.88 and I gained about 200-250 rpms, I would expect 350-450 gain in rpm at 70-75.

    Im saying "completely different" for the new Toyota Tacoma Vs old Toyota Tacoma not comparing it to other brands. You're right double overdrive is not that rare as a matter of fact the Lexus GX 460 has had it since 2010.
