All of you giving all of your inferences for justifications on why disks are a waste of time and money, are the same as everyone else in every other thread just like this one. Strictly opinionated on. As if the idea in the head is more accurate than physics or personal experience. Whether through ownership or 2nd hand. That makes me

Plain and simple. The truck stops way more quickly. How is that bad?

Everyone allllllllwaaaaaayyyyys wants to upgrade wheels, and tires, and lifts and whatever gets their moddin' jollies off. Rarely do they remember that they have added a LOT of mass with takes more force to sublimate the inertia. Derrrrr.

I always like the quote, "I never rev higher than 2k rpms." Sloths. How the shit does one accelerate into moving traffic, without being hazardous???? Push the damn gas pedal and use the engine. It enjoys it and sounds damn good reving up, with a good exhaust. :burp:

In fact you can change the rear drums to discs. I have not experienced any ill effects after the conversion! Anyone who says discs don't help at all either didnt break in their pads correctly, or doesn't own rear discs because the truck definitely stops better with 4 wheel disc brakes. It may still need a proportioning valve and possible a MC upgrade to be ideal, but its definitely better after doing rear brake swap! and it certainly doesn't look bad eitherIMG_20180107_125742.jpg

If you noticed a difference during normal day to day driving after a rear disk upgrade then you altered the vehicle's braking dynamics. Probably not a huge deal since our trucks have ABS but it's still just not something I'd want to be fucking with. If I needed more braking power I'd upgrade the fronts.

Yes the braking Dynamics are much different. Before, no matter how hard I womped on the brake pedal the rears would never lock up. Now if I stomp on the brake really hard the rears will just start to make a little noise but not fully lockup. The better pedal feel was worth the cost of upgrading alone, its much easier to modulate the brake pedal and get nice controlled stops from any speed after the brake upgrade. Once I do the fronts then we will really be talking about braking performance.

Possibly a backup car. I figured early 90s Japanese steel would hold up in an endurance race, plus I got the car for free in exchange for helping a buddy with a motor swap.

That's the point. To improve the braking performance by altering the braking dynamics.

I bought the mounting plates from SOS and put 4runner disc brakes on. With ABS disabled the rears locked up first, but I already bought the lines and proportioning valves for the actuator delete so it didn't really matter. Ended up not buying the adapter for the 4runner MC.

The main reason i got rid of the drums is because I think they look like shit and I was opening the system for the actuator delete anyways. The only thing I'd have done differently was not coming to the forums and reading through pages of people telling me why I shouldn't do it.

Couldn't be happier with the new setup. It's exactly what I wanted and only costs a couple hundred bucks.

EDIT: To answer the OP's question, the braking is not noticeably better as far as stopping distance is concerned. The install was extremely easy. Hardest part is cutting off the drum mounts, which only takes a couple minutes with a grinder. The best thing I've done for my braking is bypassing the ABS actuator and running new lines. The pedal feels amazing now. Before it always felt spongy even after trying the ABS bleeds discussed here on the forums. Used a vacuum bleeder and speed bleeders and it always felt like crap before.

This is one of those topics no one agrees on. But that being said, disc brakes are better always. They may wear out earlier but stop better every time.
Just look at how many cars and trucks have them now. I will keep my 15 the way it is anyway, the conversion is expensive and a pain to put on and I would worry about getting parts for the
    conversion.
