Hello! I am a big fan of mudding/offroading and I am looking at buying an SR5 2wd 2006 Toyota Tacoma and I was curious if Off Roading was still an option with this truck? I'm aware it is optimal to have 4x4 with TRD package because of tire locking but that is just not something that is an option for me right now. I found a good deal on a truck and wanted to know opinions on if Off Roading/mudding was still a safe activity to do in this truck?

    Thanks!

If you like to go anywhere off the pavement a 2wd truck is a terrible idea. You will be stuck frequently and always wishing you had a 4wd. Don’t waste your time and money on what you already know isn’t gonna get the job done.

    /\/\/\/\/\/\ Don't listen to this...

It all depends on what you want to do, all my previous vehicles were all 2wd, I had 2 different rangers and 1 Toyota pickup, but mind you they were all full long travel. But the offroading I did were high speed and open desert, whoop sections, jumping, nothing requiring 4x4. Even some spots, I just had to hammer down and I got through it. So open desert trails, open sand terrain, small rock patches, and muddy spots are still manageable in a 2wd truck.

If you want to do deep mudding, rock crawling, short and steep hills, snow, cruise slow then 4x4 is the way to go.

it just all depends on what and how you will be using the truck. My current Tacoma is a 4x4, will I ever need it, most likely not. But I bought it for going to the mountain to go snowboarding in the winter, and do some fun trailing a little more challenging trails than I normally am use to in a 2wd truck.

Momentum is your best friend with 2wd even better if equipped with E-locker .

It is true, don’t listen me. Get a full long travel setup to go fast!!! Clearly that is in your budget..... there is some truth tonthi of course but the reality is you’re gonna be stuck all the time! Do you live with winter? 2wd trucks are not great for that either...

Coming from experience. And trying to help the guy to not get discourage in picking up a 2wd truck. Trust me 4x4 trucks are just as expensive to own as a long travel 2wd truck. nobody starts as full blown long travel vehicle, I had a 02 auto 2wd ranger with a spindle lift and beat the shit out of the truck, and never got stuck.

If your worrying about breaking stuff, you should not be going offroad. anything can happen on the trail and anywhere.

your answer does not give specifics, so with his question yes 2wd can and are very capable offroad.

Specifically, they give real advice. A guy low on cash can relate relate to your LT fairytale. Spoken like a real web wheeler who never got stuck... lol sure thing.

OP, do whatever you think works for you. When you’re stuck in 2 inches of mud or unable to get up a hill that your sister just drove her rav4 up remember my opinion!

just make sure to use the buddy system, have a paper map, tools, parts, and some other types of communication besides a cell phone. Sounds like this may be his first truck, got to start somewhere. I been there and done that, don't let some things stop you from getting off the pavement and having fun.

just sharing from experience. stay golden.

to the op just take all this advice as you will, and you will make the best decision for you. Happy hunting, don't buy something on impulse, be patient and do your research.

OP what kind of offroading are you planning on doing? that's the deciding factor here

Detroit true Trac and you will be surprised how well it does off road. Don't expect it to do everything though like rock climbing .

only because it's hard to get 28-30 inches of travel from IFS and make it reliable. If it was doable and reliable Im sure most drivers would want 4x4.

I think this is the most important piece of this. If you can wait there will be various options that you feel are good deals if you can take some time.
