Hey guys I searched online and didn't really find any answers, I know you can't drive imogene in winter but can you hike it? Not planning to do the entire route but wanted to see if I could hike it from telluride to at least the first mine section (the one where you go down the hill)

Depends on how much snow. I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s been snowing a lot the last few days.

The snow drifts up on this mountains can be feet deep completely covering the road.

They hike Mt Washington in the dead of winter! (world's worst weather) At the summit they have 20 foot poles for the Snow cat to follow! Obviously you don't want to try this when there bad weather forecasts.

You can do anything once! I've been snowshoeing a few times and learned that I either had on the wrong size shoe, or sometimes there's no keeping on top of the snow with them. Being thigh deep in snow is tough enough without snowshoes, but when you have to pull up a snowshoe from that deep, it's exhausting.

If covered in snow, I would opt for skinning it.

Sorry for the negative, but you are not likely to make it to 13K+ elevation on snowshoes. Avy danger is high above tree line as well.

I would do the Alta Lakes trail instead

Funny all the comments from people who don't even live in CO. :D

I do not live in CO, but was up there in April to do a few hikes. There was still some snow on the ground and it snowed one evening prior to one of my hikes. Twin Sisters was one of the hikes I did and there was a decent amount of snow on the ground (wore spikes and stayed on the trail/hardpack), but adding another two thousand feet of elevation and another couple of inches of snow on the ground would have make it a lot tougher. Can it be done? I would say with the correct equipment, proper physical conditioning and appropriate planning, it is POSSIBLE. Only you can answer the question of whether it is wise to do so or not. How much experience do you have? Have you done other comparable hikes in similar weather? Do you have the proper equipment? Are you planning on solo hiking? Lots of questions that only you can answer - and since your life is potentially on the line, and we do not really know anything about you or your capabilities, we can't really answer that question.

Full disclosure: I have NOT hiked that particular trail.
