Can you make it to 400,000? 3.4l V6 FSM

I change mine oil every 3000 miles at the dealership since new in 1997.
Seams to work just fine for me, that was 575,000 miles ago.

 

Anyone else had to replace their oil pan gasket? or know of other common areas on the 3.4 that oil will leak? maybe it isn't the oil pan gasket but it sure looks like it.

 

Valve cover gaskets last about 200k or so then leak down the engine to the oil pan.

 

nice, thats almost 200 oil changes! Happy engine.

I might hit 5,000 miles but I try not to go longer than that. and ill slowly have to add in new oil during that because of suspected leaky gasket on the pan.

Thought id post these since the pictures tell more than I ever could.

This was 330,000 on an OEM lower ball joint, luckily my driveway is about 15 feet to the right of my truck in the picture. This would have been catastrophic on the highway. If you have a 1st Gen and haven't done your lower ball joints, check them out immediately. I say replace with OEM, mine lasted 330,000 miles.

 

this was the first time it broke. unfortunately I dont have a picture of the second time but it was a few rings down the pipe that it broke the second time, pretty close though.

 

You have to replace them every 100-150,000 miles to be safe

Well crap, I'm at 200k. Guess now that I've been warned I'm adding them to the "while I'm in there" list with steering rack and shocks.

What about the charcoal canister? Didn't see it on your list of things done @96BlueTacos and your mileage is up there. Are they common to need replacing?

 

I’m at 575,00 with original canister, so they don’t go out to often, but the vacuum hoses do.
I actually replaced all my vacuum hoses on the entire truck just last month. Some get hard, some get
loose depending where they are located by heat. Bottom line is they end up leaking just a little vacuum
here and there and that effects the end result of how the motor runs.

 

That looks like an old pipe. Has to be defective, there should no physical stress
on that pipe to crack it.

Definitely keep an eye on the LBJs,
I Have OE canister on my truck still. My canister makes a funny "pulsing rattling hiss", from what I have read that isn't a problem, but can be remedied with a small dead air space that comes off the air drain pipe. later models of the 3.4 had it on them from factory from what ive seen.

In the FSM it shows how to test the canister, so ill be doing that and as long as its operating, ill avoid getting new one as long as I can, they are pretty damn expensive. Not sure about the commonality of replacement for these.

 

Did you order hoses from Toyota?

 

Look up egr delete you can trick the ecu with a 10k ohm resistor

 

That picture is of the original factory pipe break, then I replaced it, and then the new pipe broke maybe after 10,000 miles.....What do you think the chances are of having a defective factory pipe fail at about 300,000(not exact) and then getting another defective pipe from Toyota dealer that failed in significantly less miles? im not saying impossible im just wondering if there is an underlying issue causing my EGR to get exhaust for longer than it is designed?

I am speculating hard because i am not savvy with exhaust and emissions systems.....

Heres a question, if my muffler was really old and not working properly, could the exhaust be "backing up" into the EGR pipe making it too hot and causing failure? or the exhaust isn't getting out of the system as efficiently as it should be? I was feeling my exhaust last night and it feels like it might be a little weak coming out of the tail pipe, i've checked for exhaust leaks as best I could and I didn't find any. I know very little about exhaust and all of that so i'm not sure if this would even be a possibility, just thinking. Also I have a New Cat, forgot to put that on my list will edit it now.
