Hmmm looks like rivets are securing them in? That would be a PITA it seems but hopefully someone does a swap soon and can post up a tutorial. Thanks for the pics!

I think it looks sharp when paired with the Barcelona Red exterior, but if you have any other color exterior it looks a little out of place. Just my opinion/personal taste though and some love the panels obviously.

Struggling to find a tread with any newer info on these ugly red inserts. Anyone successfully cover or paint theirs? Would like to know what I will be getting into before I start if possible!

Contact Katzkin? They sell leather for the seats that include the side door panels. Maybe you can just order some black door panels separate.

I'll check it out, I would guess that if they sell the whole panel then I won't just be able to get the red section out and recover it myself then. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks man. That's my plan if I can't get just that section out by its self.

I would suggest going to a local upolstery shop. Check with folks to see if they can reccomend a good shop to you.

My guess is that they can most definately change the panel to be whatever color or material you like... or dye them pretty much any color for you. It may cost you a few bones, but it will be done right and you will get the end result you want.

I have Katzkins, they don't come with the door panels for the 3rd Gens.

However my 04 4Runner they did come with the door panels, the section was attached the same way. If you look at the picture of the inside of the door panel posted above somewhere, there are (white) plastic pegs coming through holes in the door panel (black) and then they melt the end of the peg down so it can't pull back through. Cut the melted white plastic off with a razor, and you can remove the section of door panel you need. Once you are done, put it back together using the scraps of the white plastic you cut off, and using a plastic welder or high power soldering iron melt that plastic back on there.

I'm thinkin I might try to remove and re melt those clips, not sure how brave I'm feeling. The girlfriend said she could re wrap them if I can get them out, I just don't want them to be all loose and floppy when I put them back in haha I wonder if those clips come out of the panel completely to where I might be able to use new clips of some sort all together.

I had the door panels off my trucks for a stereo install and looked at it closely. Those are like melted on rivets. Once you take it off you'll need to glue it back together.

OP, your truck has a tan headliner from the factory? what color is your carpet? I thought the only available interior color is black?

Hey all, I had mine wrapped in leather to match my katskinz leather seats. You have to cut the panel off from the back (I actually melted the plastic parts to remove it from the back), had them wrapped and then I took very large washers and screwed each part I melted off to the panel from the backside. It's not that hard. Don't have pics of the install, sorry, did this a year ago.

Why not swap the whole door panel instead of the inserts?

Yea, theres a tutorial of someone doing exactly this on YouTube, except I think he just used epoxy to reattach the panels instead of melting the plastic

Ha, I wish I had the red inserts to brighten up the blah interior, I guess we all have different tastes.

Bought my SR5 on 11/1/18 with the hideous red door panels, and passenger airbag cover. Bitched to the salesman about them and he gave me the name of a shop in Jax he sends everyone to, to have them recovered in black. Had mine done 7 days after buying the truck. Took an hour and a half and $250.

There's a video on youtube of guy taking the inset panel off the door panel, and recovering it, it was about an hour for one panel I think on the video, it seemed very tedious. I had a local shop install my (brownish) leather seats material (replacements, not covers), I also bought some extra vinyl material to match to do the insets, but the shop said it wouldn't stay on due to the curve shape (?) I've also bought some brillo leather spray paint to try removing the insets and spray painting them, but haven't tried it yet. I haven't found an inexpensive place to buy the door interior panels to experiment, the very cheapest seems to be about $100 per door panel on ebay. Most of the interior panels seem to be closer to $250 each.
