    Best way to see if you've got it cleaned enough is to take it down a dusty dirt road. Then visit the car wash a few more times.


    The 2 liter bottle trick works pretty good, but use the top portion and keep the screw cap. trim the bottle so it fits in the space below the oil filter's drip nozzle. When you loosen the filter enough, it only loses a cup or less. Let that drain and then remove the small funnel you made and pour out the contents. You now also have a funnel you can use to fill the engine when you change your oil. I had a couple of plastic MTL gear oil bottles and used them in this manner. They are more useful than any of the store-bought funnels I have.

    Good excuse to clean the engine bay. I’ve never cleaned mine, but I’d have to if I did this.
