It is a little soft on the bottom, have to get into it to get in moving...though that said, most of the older trucks especially the 4 cylinders liked to be revved. The old 22R's liked it around 3500 rpm.

The 2nd and 3rd gens drive more like a fullsize to me, would like a little extra grunt off the bottom. Especially when it is loaded down pulling a moto trailer and loaded down with gear. Be nice for pulling mountain passes.

I see fords around town all the time with a 6” block kit with big muddy tires and “off road” accessories. You gotta compensate somehow. The majority of people that buy them are people who probably don’t even know how to pop the hood:confused: there’s a reason fords aren’t built by people for overlanding and Tacoma’s are. Unless your speaking of the raptor of course.

3rd beats 2nd gen in gauntlet tow by a whopping 45 seconds, just as fast in 1/4 and 0-60, much faster in passing, 20% more hp, so how is that wimpy ?

Given what I have said, I actually like the 2.7 too...would work for about 90% of the things I do. It is when it is loaded down on the weekends and on my couple week long moto trips, that I would get annoyed. The V6 would be better, but then the price jumps...and for the price you can buy a bigger truck with more power that gets the same or a little better mpg's. I can find V8 Tundras in the low 30's some of the regular cabs below that.

More about taking a load from a dead stop than all out speed...and you have to rev the shit out of it to get up the gauntlet. Which I have been up that road several times. In 4 banger Toyotas and fullsizes with gasser and diesel V8's.

More torque available down low, the less you have to ring its' neck. V8 will just lope along, the V6 is screaming.

Nissan just neeeds to not be mentioned. I’d rather get a 99’ Tacoma over a new frontier, or Nissan ever.

Just back off on the rev of the 3rd and coast in and tie with the 2nd lol instead of a minute faster.
Power is there if you need it, unlike 2nd gen with a whopping 20% less hp.
You worry about 2 secs off the line or the 2 hour tow ?
Winning is winning. Must be hard when the 3rd gen passes you up that hill huh ?

Ha! Like the OP don't want the size of a fullsize either. Though a RCSB will work. Plenty of power in a somewhat small package.

It isn't about jumping off the line, I drive like an old man, like to ease into things. Gobs of torque down low does that...especially if you want to cruise on the highway or secondary back roads for 14-15 hours straight for a couple days on end...loping along at 2000-2500 rpm.

    Who asked what you wanted?

OP wants a truck with room for his 6'1 frame, heated seats, a sunroof, more modern amenities than an 05 Tacoma and a drivetrain that performs properly.

Why I think the Tacoma should of gotten the 4.7 V8 as an option. For people want a small package, but like to tow/haul.

Or even the new 4.6. It puts out 327 ft/lbs and 310 hp, be perfect for the Tacoma.

And there lies the problem... ;)

Which doesn't make sense as you can buy cars with incredibly powerful engines these days, that whole vehicle's foot print rule is rubbish.

I came from the world of big block V8's and diesels, and started buying Toyotas for zipping around town, and which were more economical at the time (this is 26 years ago)...but the gap on fuel economy has closed. When I go drive a new V8 or Ecoboost, and think that mileage and price is fairly similar, plus get a lot more capacity. The Tacoma makes less sense to me, not that it is a bad truck...it is a great truck...but is it a great truck for the money? Is the question.
