I'm 5'8" but I sit as tall as some people who are over 6'. It's torso height that matters.
I test drove the '16 and was also unimpressed with the power band. As much as I liked the rest of the truck, I couldn't do it. I like my truck to have it's power at lower rpm. Peak hp and torque mean little to the performance of an engine. I bought a 13 Limited and am hoping something will change in the future.

Love 4Runners, but I do need the bed. Wife drives an SUV. Don't see myself going from a 2nd gen to another 2nd gen. Also knowing Toyota's history of keeping Gen's the same 10 years, I may have to do something before they change because I don't think I want to drive my current truck 20 years if the 3rd gen doesn't work out for me.

If you didn't like it right off the bat you're probably not going to like it later.

Might be time to move up to a Tundra if you want to be brand loyal.

Or you can play around with S mode on your next test drive.

No one here should need to convince you to like something you have reservations about. If you don't like it look at something else.

Dropping $35k of cash on a depreciating asset that you don't need and aren't absolutely convinced you can't live without strikes me a tremendously bad idea.

And this is coming from one of ten people on this forum who is completely happy with their 3rd Gen...

4.0 wrangler, 4.0 Tacoma and 3.5 Tacoma. None of those "threw me back in my seat". The 3rd gen is the best of the bunch and it wasn't even close on the comparison. I will never go back to a 2nd gen or a wrangler. I only drive manuals though.

They got it right this time, they're selling them as fast as they make them and they still lead the competition as more models come out.

They just didn't get it right for the OP. People have different tastes and the tacoma isn't the answer for everyone.

He can always wait to see what the Ranger feels like.

I had the 4.0 Cherokee with the 5 speed manual, that's the one I wish I had back.

That 3rd gen has 18% more hp. Off the line not as fast, but equal in 0-60 and 1/4, and never try to pass one once going cause you'll never do it unless he lets you. 3rd gen is faster once moving and that rpm is up. It puts you back in the seat and a lot of fun to drive.

I had a 2005 tacoma for 11 years. Walked in to the dealership to buy some parts for my gen 2 and walked out with the gen 3. Would not go back in a heartbeat. I am 6'3" and fit just fine. The interior is lightyears better than my gen 2. Have no problems with the transmission. Wish it had more torque down low like the 4.0, but enjoy the 22 average MPG. 265/70/17 tires looked big on my gen 2, merely adequate for the gen 3. People on this forum are literally insane. They want the torque and towing of a cummins turbodiesel, HP of a sports car, and gas mileage of a prius (with $5K of added weight/accessories).

This is why I'm wondering if because I was driving a non broken in vehicle I didn't experience this. On the test drive I pulled out on a 45 MPH road with what I assumed was leaving plenty of time. I felt like the power wasn't ever going to kick in, watching the rear view mirror worrying about being "that guy" who pulled out and went slow. Definitely never feel that in my 2nd gen. If allowing it to be broken in and the TSB fixes that, I'm sure it would be fine. But I'm a little reluctant to spend a chunk of change and find out it never met expectation.

Nope, this is not the truck you are looking for. I drive my wife's X3 and I stomp on the gas to pull out into traffic and ".....crap" I feel like I was launched from a friggin catapult. But, I love the Taco.

The first time I drove my 17 it felt like the handbrake was on, as mentioned above the 3rd Gen runs 0-60 and the 1/4 in roughly the same times as a 2nd Gen. Power delivery is very different though, off the line and cruising at low RPMs goes to the 2nd Gen, once you are moving and up high in Revs is where the 3rd Gen shines.

Low end HP and torque compared to the 2nd gen so they are slower.
