From what I understand S mode is intended to be used to limit the highest gear the truck with shift into. Haven't played around with it because I don't know what I'm doing yet.

So when you get it into S it'll display 4th gear but ofcourse you are not in 4th. Is there a way to use the S mode as a manual/tiptronic and manually shift through the gears?

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what it is meant to be

So before starting off you should downshift to 1 and go from there? Because S4 appears to just be D with a cap at 4th gear.

S4 always shows up first. You can cycle through the gears like a manual without the clutch. It was the same in my 09 Tundra. I would use S to drop the gear when towing, and slowing down using the tranny. Try it out....

I will but just want to get an idea of what I'm doing.

For downshifts do you have to RPM match as you don't have N to switch to like in a manual? Do not want to risk damage on the first go.

If you have driven a manual before, you'll have a good idea. Just don't downshift to like 2nd while doing 50

Haha no, just drop it down, it won't let you go lower than is safe for the engine and it is still an auto your just telling it when to shift instead of itself.

    Makes sense, thanks guys.

I know how to drive stick as a basic concept but never got more than 2-3 hours in so I'm not that familiar with it.

I drop her into S mode @ 80KPH/50MPH when slowing down from Hwy to ramp....then to 3rd as she slows... You'll get the idea.... Don't put her down to S mode till you are at or below 50 MPH..!!

You can absolutely use it as a manual to select the gear your want. When I leave my steep drive, it's in first, when it levels out I move it to 2nd etc. I always use ECT unless I'm on the highway going more than 60, and consistantly get 18-20 MPG. Yes, it limits the highest gear it will shift into, but if that's too high, move it down. If you are going too fast, it will just beep at you. It's totally a manual without the clutch if you learn how to drive it.

Ah okay so it will hold the gear unlike some other cars that just shift anyway.

I'm mainly gonna try it to see if it makes downshifts smoother as the ECU likes to downsift from 4 to 1 instead of going through the years.
