    So basically, you can take your severance now and lose your job later or take the severance when you leave...

    As someone getting one of these there are 3 options:

    1) all severance now.
    2) half now, half on retiring/quitting/kicked-out.
    3) all on leaving.

    When you choose to take it does not change the amount you will receive.

    the way I understand it, yes. current federal employees are/were entitled to severance even when they quit or retired, future employees will not be.

    Yes and no.

    New employees: No severance

    Current employees: Severance stopped as of April 2013, or whatever the magic day is; paid out to that time.


    Advantage to government: everyone who was entilted to severance only gets what they have earned so far, and once everyone is paid out there will no longer be severance.
