Guess Alberta will probably make it to the next Provincial meeting on climate change and a cap and trade system

I would expect so. I'd also expect there will be no more pipelines and the oil patch will be in for a rough 5 years no matter what prices do now.

Yeah, I'm not going to damn this government for sure. At least not until they table a budget.

Someone pointed out to me today that if the Liberals get a majority federally and the NDP wins provincially, which they have, then the top tax bracket is probably looking at somewhere around a 10% real tax increase. Ouch. I guess we really are going after those one percenters.

I think it was more about where the taxes were coming out of then by how much they were going up.

Personally, I'll certainly be taxed more, but it will still be substantially less then if I was still in Nova Scotia, or anywhere else in Canada for that matter. I'm in an industry (Geologist) thats taking a kicking right now anyway, and I think the price of a barrel of oil will deliver a stronger kicking then 1-2% more corporate taxes.

I'm interested to see how they do. Its a lot of pressure and I hope they step up. They have the mandate.

Prentice also chose not to take his seat after he resigned. Not a very classy move. The PC's will be a leaderless mess for a bit, and his riding will have to have by-election in a few months to fill the seat.

She's not in favour of Northern Gateway but supports the Trans Mountain and Energy East pipelines

By support I think you mean she won't torpedo the idea but it will not get any backing from her government. This is the NDP. Basically the anti ground disturbance don't tread on mother earth party.

The NDP will over regulate the oil field. They will over regulate agriculture. They will put cities first. Those are my biggest fears because historically that's been the NDP. I might be wrong. I guess we get to find out now in the next year or two.

I wouldn't want to be in the oil field right now. Wait for budget and then watch the companies start pulling staff and resources back to Houston.

I don't buy that . If they want to set themselves up to be in contention for more than one term in office in Alberta they can't completely alienate the oil industry , but lets be real here , it's easy to come out against Northern Gateway as it essentially has no chance of ever getting built anyway

When BC had NDP governments they didn't shut down mines , oil and gas extraction or old growth logging

    The last part is true.

I think the NDP long term are hoping to break the dependence on the oil field by marginalizing the industry. They probably think Calgary and Edmonton are big enough now to ween off oil. If that's there plan we are screwed.

I just can't see the NDP supporting the rural and primary industries that still drive this province. All I can see is a large budget with a large bill, and then a major correction in the job market that will hurt the same people who voted them into office. Naturally they'll blame the PC's somehow for it.

The BC NDP isn't necessarily the Alberta NDP. I agree that we'll have to find out the hard way in the next year or two though. If a go-over of regulation streamlines things and takes input from industry to heart, as well as critics in good balance, it won't necessarily be bad. Just different. Could just be some hopeless optimism on my part there...

I think they'll have their hands too full at first to do much screwing around for a little while anyway.

And you're right, the oil patch isn't a fun place right now haha. I'm keen to see what the chatter is tomorrow around the CSEG conference and various booths/offices.

Yup, I'm a bit of a broken record but I honestly hope the NDP prove me wrong and end up being more moderate than they appear.

Looking at the riding map you can see the huge disconnect between the cities and the rural areas. The rural went more conservative and the cities went NDP. Hopefully the NDP will try to take care of rural Alberta even with the lack of support they have there.

I hope that's the honest direction the NDP are going.

Actually, to be frank, does the port of Vancouver have the ability to handle that much oil? If the terminal needs to be built it's really the next governments problem. Same with the East pipeline, the whole program is still in the planning stages so the NDP really doesn't have to do anything to block the construction because nothing is likely going to happen during the next 5 years on either of those projects.

Just my thoughts of course. Look at an election map. This government wasn't voted in by the industries or workers that drive Alberta like the NDP are claiming. I have a feeling it will be a tough go for the oil industry and agriculture industry under this government.

PS The NDP already pulled down there platform page. Guess it's time for the real one:

Port of Vancouver can handle the ship volume itself , the issues are around safely moving the ships in and out of the harbour and the mooring of ships waiting to move into the harbour
