    Interesting link.

Privatization hasn't lead to lower prices for power, which isn't surprising, but it does keep the companies honest. I've had charges on my bill dropped when I moved and I've been given credit back as an apology. The companies at least have to give you some customer service when they know there is competition just waiting to take your business.

I just looked at my last bill. I paid

    $18.58 Transmission Charge
    $37.53 Distribution Charge
-$1.84 Rate Riders (I have a digital meter, and get paid for them to use it?)
    $12.06 Local Access Fee

So before I even turned on my computer my bill was $66.33 or $69.65 after GST.

With power I was $108.49, which is about average when the A/C isn't kicking on every day.

What are you paying per KWH?

We have a stepped rate , for the first x amount of KW it's around .08 and then jumps to .11

For our 2700 sqft home right now it's about $150 / month , that includes 2 electric HWT , electric range and dryer

There is no natural gas where I live

With natural gas I'm around $200 / month for a 2300 sq ft home. Electric stove and dryer. Natural gas water heater and furnace. When we renovate the stove will be switched to natural gas. Before I switched to everything being HE my bill was regularly touching $250 / month.

my last bill was $97.08 for 520 KWH.
    $20.22 basic charge + $0.12346/KWH + municipal surcharge tax ($8.44) + GST.
they only read the meter a few times a year. I usually get a credit once a year, bill for November was a $1.99.

In the next 5 - 10 years when I redo my roof I'm going to run the numbers on pulling out some equity on a locked in low rate and installing some solar panels and the new Telsa battery wall. If I could cut $40 off of my electric bill, or even better start pumping power back on top of running off my battery at night, then it might work out over 20-30 years including the value it would add to the house.

Would you be farther ahead just doing net metering rather than adding the Tesla battery ?

We've lost power for a couple of days over the last two years due to spring storms. It didn't happen this year but the home sized battery wall is a very appealing backup power source to me over the generator I currently run.

I agree the battery is the least cost effective measure right now due to the set power price but as a backup it would work excellent.

    Good point

When we built my house we did a small generator panel that can run some essential circuits with a portable generator , you know like the fridge , freezer , a single lighting circuit and the tv circuit :)

So related to this discussion, how many people here use those parasitic draw minimizing power bars? Do you see much difference on the bill? I've thought about installing them but I figure after the $40-100 cost of each power bar I won't likely see much in the way of savings.

    Never heard of them

I have a power conditioner / home theatre power unit on my home theatre system in the basement and just a good power bar on my tv upstairs

We also have the whole home surge protection in the main panel

Our area is prone to brown outs / surges and power outages in winter

Efficiently Nova Scotia installed one in my place for free. Everything plugs into it and it shuts off power to the bar when there hasn't been a change in power draw for a programmed amount of time. So after say 2 hours if the power level doesn't change everything is cut, which shuts off the parasitic electronics. The way mine works is there is a little IR sensor override so as you use the remote the sensor is constantly resetting the 2 hour limit. If you are watching a movie or long show where you don't touch the remote a bright led flashes for 5 minutes or so then shuts everything off. Touching any button on the remote stops the flashing and resets the timer.
Don't know how much it has saved but not enough to notice a difference on the power bill here. With our heat and a/c both being electric (forced air heat pump) and hot water electrically heated there are too many variables to see if the power bar saves money.

Are we supposed to debate over a debate now?

    Seems redundant.

This is pretty common on roads just outside of major cities. A few years ago the RCMP made a major bust on an exotic car dealer in Calgary who was hosting "secret" race days just south of Okotoks for his customers and future customers on public roads without permission. There were videos of Lambo's doing over 250 kph  right past highway markers, which is how they got caught.
