and are generally one sided to create publicity/recognition for the author; generate debate/dialogue but certainly not to be confused with journalism.

Glad we all got that sorted out. :notsure:

All journalism is tainted. It's not not as clear to tell who is pulling the strings as it is with open opinion pieces.

No. a good journalist is taught to present facts, and viewpoints making it clear which is which and leave the debate portion to the audience. When the so called journalist presents their opinion and muddles what is fact versus opinion or conclusions, the story becomes more about the journalist rather than the story. Narcissists are attracted to journalism because they have an audience. I used to work for a person like this that started in journalism. He tended to weave himself into the story so the story became more about his exploits rather than presenting facts and viewpoints for the audience to decide. unfortunately, people eat that shit up (ie FOX news)

Most ridiculous sentence in that piece IMO

"When the VHS calls for an end to rodeo, what they really want is an end to a rural way of life."

Bingo in bold, and I agree with the rest. Journalism isn't dead and there are plenty of good journalists out there. There are also plenty of sources and media groups though that don't report stories on an equal footing due to political or sponsorship ties and denying that it happens would be silly. Unfortunately I find it hard to trust any news sources now adays because poor journalistic practices have infiltrated the mediums available to the point where it makes me somewhat sick to my stomach to think about the future of unbiased reporting.

    Why?

I understand it's a huge hyperbole but realistically, as had been said, the VHS wants no animal husbandry of any kind. Removing that side of the agricultural industry would be devastating and cause further loss of rural population and jobs.

It's not much of a jump to go from no rodeo to no use of animals against there own will, if you can say they have a will, at all. I like my steak and I have a lot of friends who work raising beef, dairy, pork, and other animal products. To see that industry threatened at all is personal to me to say the least.

Agreed. Ever since I had a kid though and with this new job I'm lucky to grab half of the news I used to. I can see why people end up just becoming lazy and watch a certain network/slant.
Honestly, I see it becoming a large enough movement that it could definitely start effecting the industry more and more in a negative manner.

TBH the high price of beef right now is due to sustained negative pressure on the cattle industry for the last 10 years from various economic and political issues. If you want beef to be available at least once a week to all income levels long term we need to start turning that negative farming image around. While the price escalation is helping to increase herd size the price is also causing inputs to surge which leads to a relatively small actual herd growth. The beef industry relies on decisions made politically which are heavily influenced by lobby groups like the VHS. Every ounce of negativity towards the industry is another weight on the industry at the political level that causes more issues at the base cow/calf operation level which, in turn, leads to less beef available for consumption and higher prices.

Instantly being able to trace a package of beef product to the consumer on the shelf via smart technology is a big thing that will help in a few years I think. Once the consumer can see the face of the man/woman who produced the beef and their kids right at the counter it should help get rid of some of the animal husbandry stigma's that still plague the industry.

The beef industry is extremely complex and I invite people to learn about how unique it truly is. While industry image isn't directly responsible for everything that is happening in the industry, it is contributing to a growing issue that needs to be addressed.

Where does it say that the VHS opposes all animal husbandry ?

Just a quick browsing of there website is all that is needed to see that they are extremely anti animal husbandry.

    http://www.vancouverhumanesociety.bc.ca/

I don't support animal cruelty, but I do also understand that at the end of the day we kill what we eat and working with cattle is not an easy job. Somethings that may seem cruel are necessary (tagging, cyst popping, etc) can easily be exploited into negative media without a thorough explanation of what is actually going on and why.

If ending animal abuse and cruelty makes them anti animal husbandry then I guess the SPCA is anti animal husbandry as well

That's exactly the sort of logic that is causing the problem. Thanks for pointing that out

BTW, once again, this is all personal for me as I stated so I'm not going to sit here and pretend that I can be totally unbiased about the topic. In order for some unbiased review of what is really happening someone totally third party would need to look at things from both view points in an objective manner and that's basically the job of CFIA. CFIA is also one of the most undermanned and underfunded organisations operating right now federally IMHO. So if VHS and the SPCA want better regulation of the industry and it's practices the CFIA should have it's funding restored. A healthy CFIA could look into the charges or issues that these organisations have with any practice or operation and deal with it in an appropriate manner.

Do you think the SPCA is against all animal husbandry too ?

No. I value the work they do. They do good work whistle blowing on practices that are beyond the scope of the human treatment of animals under the law. They work with law enforcement to begin the proper procedure for such violations. I find that the VHS advocates consumers to take matters into there own hands on issues far beyond the Stampede, which is a bit of a difference to me. While they talk about boycotting the CBC, they also talk about boycotts and other measures against other parts of the industry for other perceived violations without waiting for proper legal proceedings to occur. That's a big difference between the two organisations in my mind.

Maybe I'm wrong to think that. Honestly that's my impression from what I gathered on the VHS website.

I'm baling what you're swathing here.

No, it is not a public directive stated on there website or anywhere else I can think of. However, their practice of encouraging consumer action against the entire industry over a single case not yet tried by law, which is right at the bottom of their page page, could reasonably be considered a step against animal husbandry in Canada.
