Andrew Coyne had a good point on last night's At Issue that Canada should look at mandatory voting like Australia has

 

I'd like to see it. Our voter turnout is embarrassing considering the amount of ranting some groups do.

 

Me too , however , given the way the polling is now , October 20th won't be the end of the politics around who is governing the country

Yes. I'd also like to see a hybrid system between proportional representation and first past the post voting for that same reason. I want there to be the possibility of a majority with people being represented by district but some sort of mechanism to make sure every vote counts in some way.

 

About 60% of people don't care who is in charge of their taxes, healthcare, etc etc... That's scary.

Hence why I fall mid spectrum. It's hard when you are socially liberal and economically conservative.

Realistically , all three of the major parties' platforms operate within a fairly narrow window financially when you consider the overall size of spending , taxes and potential deficits

Even the Liberals' $10B deficit that has been so over demonized by the other two is so minimal against the overall scheme of things it's almost irrelevant except in name

My only fear is the lack of touch the NDP might have. I'm sure you saw the recent debacle they tried to pull in Alberta after talking about financially responsible decisions all election. I'm setup to make a good chunk of money MAYBE in a year or two if I decide to cash in and take a promotion. I'd like my wife to have the option of working while I support the family. The problem I see is that, under the NDP, I'll jump into a tax bracket where that won't be possible. In exchange I just don't see much benefit for even my less well off friends.
