How exactly is the federal government supposed to move thr price of oil up

And the Liberals are in favour or Energy East and supported Keystone XL

With no markets to ship to other than the USA and record levels of oil coming from fracking, I doubt it. No shiny new BC pipelines means no hope for a quick bounce back for a long time.

No the First Nations corridor proposal is different , the Kinder Morgan pipeline goes to Burnaby , it's 50 or 60 years old , they want to triple it's capacity

I never said the government is responsible for the price of oil? All I'm saying is that the government does have control on the taxation and growth of the oil fields projects. Under a Liberal government corporate taxes are likely going up, but at the least not going down, and the NDP will raise oil royalties to try to pay for their plans to keep Alberta's infrastructure growing and nurses, teachers, and doctors employed at full hours.

Keystone XL is only going to matter if the US needs our oil. Which right now they don't. Not really. They need some to dilute down the ultra sweet crude cracking is producing. That's about it. Energy east also has a lot of hoops to jump though and once someone, I'm not going to say who but we all know who, raises a stink about the gas pipeline being switched to oil on their land the liberals will run away from the issue like a supermodel from a leaper colony.

BTW if the Liberals want to make some hesitant friends they could get brave and nationalize Husky Oil. Build a few refineries. Invest in the better oil sands technologies. Jump start the industry a bit that way. It won't happen though.

It's more complicated than that because it would mean 3 times as much tanker traffic etc in an around Vancouver Harbour and through the Southern Gulf Islands and the current proposal has some stay in the existing right of way , some goes through protected green space plus the whole thing goes through residential Burnaby

I think refining the oil prior to moving it would make way more sense

That's what I mean. I doubt it will happen due to market forces though. This is one place where a little nationalization could work and I don't think you'd see much push back, except from China and the USA lol.

I think people would likely be less afraid of the pipelines too if they were refined materials versus the slop and chemicals

Isn't refineries on the Canadian east coast the destination for Energy East ?

    Maybe.

Then again spilling a few thousand litres of Diesel fuel isn't any better than spilling mixed crude.

Yes, but it's not everyday easterners that will protest the pipeline swap being done on their cultural land.

Someone with better knowledge would have to answer that, but to be honest IIRC it's actually fairly minor the amount of chemicals shipped back and they are no better or worse than the heavy hydrocarbons spilled anyways if the pipeline ruptures.

What people should really be worried about is the fact that the more pipelines are denied the more oil will be shipped by rail on our extremely neglected and fairly unsafe rail lines.

It's currently in consideration by the NEB and got all fucked up because of ingormation that had to be struck from the record because of conflict of interest by an " impartial " environmental assesment and the Libersls and NDP both said that prior to any approval that the whole process would basically need to be restarted and made more transparent

For example , Kinder Morgan does not have to disclose how it intends to deal with any spills on land or in the ocean in the Canadian part of the proposal citing " security reasons " and the NEB complied with that so nobody here gets to know what they are proposing

In Washington State they said Fuck You and Kinder Morgan has to disclose their response proposals for the US waters and land clean ups

Engage the First Nations up front , thats why there has been zero movement in BC as far as developments like this goes . The Feds didn't even follow the laws on consultation here , Northern Gateway was doomed from day 1
