And let's not forget the Saudis can pump oil at $25.00 a barrel until the cows come home and still make obscene profits.

It cost 340 million dollars, 5 years of negotiations, and a ton of exclusive rights to build a road through a single reserve outside of Calgary. I think early engagement and optimism are part of the solution but have little to do with what will get the deal done. Unfortunately, at $50/barrel, no one is paying billions of dollars just for the right to spend billions more modifying a pipeline.

No salt water fish but there are a ton of endangered trout species and the animals that depend on them that you, somehow, are placing a higher value on even though they are more common throughout the world.

You need to read up more on the issues facing the Western Rockies before you assume that there aren't the same sort of issues with pipelines on land.

Again, I never said it wasn't lol. It's not going to happen though because first nations will ask for obscene amounts of money to do it and hide behind the environmental issues if challenged. I mean it's their right and their land but let's not candy coat what they are doing.

I think they should be entitled to compensation , and I'm not sure that " hiding behind the environmental issues " is the correct way of categorizing their concern that their land and use of their lands aren't catastrophically altered in the name of some multi national oil companies pumping unrefined goods to China , I think they have valid concerns about pipelines to the BC coast

    Sterdog,

You need to read up, I am talking about migratory whales, migratory birds, sub species of bears that are not found any where else in the world just to name a few of the species that depend on TIDAL waters and are NOT common through out the world. That is why the pipeline is dead on the coast.

Don't even start on land locked species, besides, the Saudis arewilling to pump oil at $25.00 a barrel and Iran is getting ready to produce as well so the tar sands are also dead issue and the pipeline are also non-issue.

I thought the Canada east pipeline was for eastern Canada, or did we change topics again. Am I painting with a wide brush? You bet. However right now that reserve I talked about is spending a fair chunk of that money on their own version of Ralph bucks, which will be wasted, and the rest is going into their private and exclusive developments along the road. I expect any pipeline deal concerning the Canada East pipeline will require concessions that go above and beyond reasonable compensation for risks to the land compared to what anyone else in the world would get unless they are trying to run a pipeline through downtown Amsterdam.

Let's be honest OZ, the idea of shipping refined oil to China is a pipe dream as long as China can buy unrefined product somewhere else. It's not even worth talking about.

The consultation law applies to all of it , that's what I was talking about

The several Trout species found on the east side of the Rockies are all unique subspecies. So are the bears that rely on them, and the rest of the extremely complex ecosystem they support which includes many other species that are unique to my area. Not only that, but the water from those area's is used for all of Western Canada including the sugar in your coffee and the various Agricultural products that come from Canada's bread basket. Anyways, I could continue to try to have a conversation with you, but your mind is obviously made up so let's agree to disagree. BTW this is the reason why nothing useful will ever get done between Alberta and BC on pipelines. No one is willing to find common ground and everyone just assumes their concerns are the most important or, even worse, the only important concerns.

I'm fine with consultation and fair compensation. I just don't think fair compensation will get the deal done with oil at $50/barrel. Not without additional government support which won't happen, and maybe shouldn't happen.

The main difference between spills on land and spills in the ocean is percentage of recovered oil , plus Dilbit sinks , IIRC I think the percentage cleaned up on the ocean tends to be around 10%

No doubt. BTW I'm not trying to say there aren't issues that need to be addressed about oil recovery in sensitive marine habitats. However, I believe if you are that worried about it, maybe we should totally ban shipping oil in Canadian waters. Maybe we should even ban boats running on Diesel on open water. Where's the line? Where is it economic, socially, and politically acceptable? Because I don't think we've found that line.

Thats where the transparent environmental assesment is supposed to come in , but we got rid of those cause they take too long

I think that has been communicated to the Alberta government quite clearly. The tidal waters and the sea life they support will trump oil every time. The pipeline will not be built anytime soon THROUGH BC for those and a multitude of other reasons.

BC can go hump a tree, literally. I guess maybe the separatists are right. I can already see the Wildrose going back to their roots for the next election.

I'm all in favour of those accessments, even if they take 5-10 years, as long as once they are done real progress and infrastructure construction can begin and not another study about the last study.

I wonder if the new Govt. Will revisit this?

Perhaps special oil tankers could be built to shuttle the oil to a less sensitive port from a less sensitive spot. Nope, wait, sealife everywhere and no amount of data will make it completely safe.
